My GAS "issue" this summer is my desire to get a 5-string back in the collection. I've tried three, sold one. I currently have a 35" active Lakland and the latest passive Fender P5 variant. I like the true Fender P bass tone and their P5 has it.

My big GAS discovery earlier this year, however, was the 30" short scale bass. Every time I play it at church I get great feedback and it really sounds good in the IEMs and is fun to play. I have a JMJ Mustang and really like it. Back story: Our big church WL's rented out a local theater venue earlier this year to do a show of all their original songs. I was in the audience and the bass player (full time music producer) played both a Fender Jazz and a short scale. When he played the Jazz I could not hear any note definition. When he played the short scale I heard every note clearly. That changed my thinking about a short scale.

I just agreed to purchase a Fender Mustang JMJ from bassist Shae Wooten (Elevation Worship)‼️

It arrives next week. Can't wait to play at church. I will try to post video on my Instagram account. @rcmbass

But, the P5 gives me everything I want-- so much so that I don't really want to bring my other basses out. It just feels like home. Plus, I really need to send the J5 out to Spencer to refinish the board. It is worn down to bare wood in spots.

Some of you may remember that I took a 14 year break from playing. Last summer, I got back into it and jumped on TB. Many of you were playing four strings. I bought a Precision and Jazz bass. I stopped playing my 5 string Warwick because I loved being back on a four string.

This post is making me want to play my fiver again! This is so fun!! Too many choices, basses, pedals, etc. I love this new season of playing and TB.

Thank you all for such great wisdom, guidance, and downright fun, all around this instrument we love.

I was briefly considering tuning one of my 4's BEAD. I guess it all depends on how much your team transposes. I use the B string a lot. Much more than the G. But, I decided against it because I *do* use the G for some songs. I could play higher up the D string, but stuff like Same God would be difficult without the G.

I bought a BEAD set but chickened out putting them on my Jazz bass. Maybe I will give it a try. 😆

How did that deal come together? I put the la Bella mustang flats on mine and it sounds great. Nice finger style, pick sounds good, my pedals all sound nice with the JMJ.

Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to get it.

I took an online lesson from Shae the top of this year. Talked about gear, practice routine, etc. We stayed connected and have become friends. He just moved to New York City. An amazing person and player.

I ordered the new Mustang flats from La Bella. I plan to put them on and leave them on forever.

OK, I need advice. The two candidates for the BEAD tuning are my Fender American P Bass with Fralin pick ups or my parts caster with a Fender Jazz Bass neck and Seymour Duncan pick ups. Any suggestions on which one to use?

If you are looking at tuning down to BEAD, I think the P/J with the high mass bridge is a really solid choice. The P pickup handles the low notes with a lot of punch and weight, and the J pickup gives you some extra clarity when you need it. The heavier bridge also helps the low string feel tighter and ring out better.

A Jazz can definitely work too, but in my experience the P/J will usually give you a stronger foundation while still leaving you some tonal flexibility.

Bryce Vaughn's recent two pedal board rundown videos describe how he has it organized. I think he used to have the BMS in a Stomp loop and add some low end EQ to it. In the current board, I'm not sure.
