Most Youtube bass demo videos are pitifully bad. Too much talking, too much slapping and too much 'stunt' playing with tapping and stuff. The bass is typically recorded via either the microphone in the camera or a really anemic DI feed. Sometimes the bass is panned off to one channel for no clear reason. And then there is the ignorance of the reviewer, claiming a switch 'boosts the bass' in a passive instrument, or messing up some other information.
I would like to see a video of a bass played through an SVT at proper volume, picked up with one of those 'dummy head' stereo mic setups. I want to hear that amp move air, as though I was in the room with it.

Only a few short years ago, a “celebrated” player here had lots of demo videos all over YouTube that were profoundly bad. Sounded like he was a 12 year old just starting out.
Of course, those videos were just fine to the TB collective but the video that the OP posted is something to throw rocks at? At least the guy can play.

Never mind the bass demo, itself... where's the subtitles? I couldn't understand one word he uttered...
How about Norman's Rarely Used Cars? With every bass purchased, he throws in a free set of wiper blades.

Nah, I don't know who you mean. There are some Talkbass celebrities out there though, and I do wonder how good they honestly are.I will say this: I always thought Dave from 'Dave's World of Fun Stuff' sucked at bass. All his workbench demos of repaired instruments sounded dreadful. Then he got a gig with a band, and he uploaded a live video. Damn. That guy was driving the bus. An absolutely killer bassist in a straight blues/rock band. No soloing or funny stuff, but a solid sense of rhythm and note choice.
The guy in the OP video can play, in as much as that he can operate a machine that makes bass notes. He doesn't seem to have anything musically to say, or at least can't say things musically on the spot. Fair shout, neither can I; I don't demo basses online, though. His technique is profoundly frustrating. Like he has an academic approach to double-thumb technique. He has the moves for sure, and understands the processes, but it doesn't come out as pleasant notes or coherent music.
The demo wasnt that bad...His playing is OK if not a little lacklustre: perhaps he 420'd right before playing and his mind was in another zone.....What I thought sucked was the "bass tone" itself....However, I dont think it was the bass but, instead, too much coloring on the EQ of the amp
I do all the time, live and in studio ( its primarily what I get calls for)...and, because slap bass really emphasizes all of the harmonic structure of string tone by virtue of the technique, its pretty much what I benchmark basses by....so, everyone is different

That's the impression that I got about Dave.
"A straight blues/rock" kinda guy.
He tends to ridicule any bass that's meant to go beyond what he does with a bass.
Yeah, he's a tedious and self-righteous prick, but that is part of the charm. Or something. If it doesn't have one pickup, and wasn't made by Fender in 1975 then it isn't worth poopie, apparently.
That's an insult to wonderfully composed video game music.

On a more serious note, I never really thought any demo universalrenote did on YouTube was any good. He would play something for 2 seconds, go off key, then smack really random fast notes that had no musical context, then wash, rinse and repeat until someone likely kicked him out of Guitar Center.
Though not half as bad compared to some of the other gems in this thread, this one was always pretty bad:
One lick he does (the one with both pickups) in particular where he loses his key really irks me. Plus, "...get those brighter tones from some of the mid recordings from the 70's and the late 60's..." - nice read there, bro!
