Worst bass tone in a professional recording?

That's easy. Radiohead, A Punchup at Wedding, off of Hail to the Thief.

I'm going to get flogged for saying this, but I hate pretty much any bass tone from late 70's through the 80's punk. My skin crawls when I hear empty bass that sounds like it's coming from coffee can speakers. Ugh! I like warm, fat growl.
I actually thought, this bass tone suites the song really well even though its like u describe, 'empty bass'

Bakithi Kumalo's tone on Paul Simon's Graceland Album is pretty awful...but I'm still drawn to it.

Astonishing ... Kumalo's tone on that album is approximately my ideal tone.
Another vote for crossroads here. Listen to the Rush version from "Feedback" to hear it done right. Geddy's tone kills on that one... (as usual

I'm far more drawn to his unique lyrical phrasing and slippery timing...truly inspiring stuff and I would never want to give the impression of disparaging such a wonderful player and human being. Maybe it takes that kind of mid-range emphasis to pull off that style but unless I was playing music in a similar style that tone is too "up front" for me.
Yep, I'd say Kumalo's tone on Graceland is the perfect tone to me.
Back on topic, I can't submit this as "worst bass tone ever recorded" but it just bothers me because of how much it ruins the song for me. Hunter Bergens tone on "Dark come soon" by Tegan and Sara is just awful. It sounds like a fart being played through a burp pedal out of a broken speaker.
And I don't know why because the rest of the album sounds great. I know it's not all him on that album but he has other tracks on there that sound really good to me.

Aside from what has been said, I can't stand that ADD-style 60s/70s "cinematography," with all of the jumping around!
What is it that you don't like about this one? Hail To The Thief is one of my favorite records.
