worst bass you've ever owned?

I've never had any real dogs in my kennel, so I've either chosen well or been lucky. BUT the worst of the lot (if I had to choose) was my first, a Guild B-301A. Baseball bat neck and prone to neck-dive. I also had a Kramer DMZ 5000 that was a diver.

I'd welcome both of them back with open arms, given the chance.

Sorry, let me be clear.
I DO like the hoppus bass ..as a bass.. its got pbass SD 1/4 lb. ers, sweet lookin jazz body..(definatley looks "right" for that genre.)
cool color selection.

The one I got was a lemon..it was used, badly abused most likely, the Neck could not be adjusted enough to get the boomerang curve out of it.
Crockodile Dundee would have gotten more use out of it than I cld.

So I meant MY bass was really bad.
I'm not dissin Mark hoppus/fender/Jbassbodies/pbass pickups or anything.

Worst experience with a bass was the warwick nt5 for those who don't know they have a "hidden neck through" on mine the neck actually bowed between the fingerboard and the pickups and cracked the top of the bass. Before the damage, the low b was one of the best I've used but high up the d and g strings it sounded really sterile. I've stayed away from neck throughs since.

I ordered a custom 5 string bongo once. Waited months to get it and when I did they sent it with the wrong pickgaurd. It was by far the coolest looking bass I had at the time but I just didn't like how the bass "hung" it naturally wanted to hang more to my right and felt really awkward to play. Almost like playing a short scale bass.

As for absolute junk.... My winner is an ibanez TR 5 string. Keeping the action playable was an absolute nightmare. I actually gave it away.

SX P. Bridge rout was messed up & the strings were way off the pup poles, maple neck was so slathered with gloss that it was a chore to play.

Second place goes to the Ibanez Jet King. Couldn't get it set up right at all & neither could my tech. Nut was off. The E string was too far in and the G string was almost at the edge of the fretboard. Cool looking bass for sure, but played like crap.

Mine was a bottom of the line Cort, the neck went banana on me and couldn't be fixed. Sounded decent, though. I only paid $100 in the early '90s, so it wasn't much of a loss.

USA Peavey Cirrus BO 5'er...the bass FELT amazing and was really well-made, but the tone was just completely not there for what I like to have in a bass. It was just very bland and vanilla tone without any bite, no matter what I did with it. Later on found out there was a compression circuit in the preamp that made me absolutely hate the tone of it. It was also a 35" scale so good luck finding SS strings of your preference in that size =/

Rickenbacker 4001. Older black one with the checkerboard binding. I got a pro setup and the action was low, but the neck felt like a baseball bat, the binding chafed, and this particular one had Seymour Duncan Rick pickups that sounded terrible. I've owned 3 and never bonded with any of them, but this one was the biggest dog. I've had basses that played worse and sounded worse, but this one had a combination of fail that put it over the top.

I'm not going to say they are bad basses, but I've owned two seperate blonde VM jazz's that both had issues. The first one's hardware felt like it slowly began falling apart after a few months, where it was perfectly fine when I bought it. Alot of things became rattle-y on it and the pickups sounded like they were dying by the time I got rid of it.

The second one I owned seemed to be superior in every way. It sounded much better and there weren't too many (if any) things rattling around on it. After about a year of owning it I ended up growing out of it, and decided I finally wanted to trade it in towards a g****r. Low and behold, the shop clerk that delt with me pulled me aside to look at the neck... damn thing was totally warped and beyond repair. He said they'd still take it, but the warping deducted from the instrument's worth. Got $100 for it towards the g****r at least... :shrug:

my first bass back in 2002 was a cort p copy. cost 129. that thing is still kicking and sounds great.

To be fair I weighed the Rick comment heavier despite receiving an SX with a dead pickup and a broken nut. Those were easy fixes on a cheap bass. I had an old Gibson EB something or another way back in the day (SG shaped 2 pickups) that sounded like pewp and played horribly, but that model isn't really in the same league as a Rick 4001 or a Fender Jazz.

I'm also half expecting this thread to be closed, hate threads rarely thrive for long.

My first, back when I was 11. Think it was called an Encore. Short scale with dorky chrome covers all over. I remember a tuner stripped and the local shop sold me a gold Fender tuner out of a scrap box. These days, I wish I still had it.

Music Man Stingray. It was a fine bass, sounded good and played well, just not my thing. I ended up trading it for a complete Pearl drum kit. So, good bass, just my least favorite, which makes it the worst bass I ever owned by default.

Horribly misaligned A tuner.

Another super terrific body blem!

The worst part was that it would cut out and go into tuner mode without warning. And the tuner rarely tracked properly.

Oh look, Musicians Friend has 4 of these used... Wonder why :/
