Worst dive you’ve played at

also it was in a punk rock and getting mugged while walking to your car neighborhood

Is there anything more punk rock than getting mugged while walking to your car? ;)

Of course I mean other than not having any money to give the mugger and instead bumming a smoke off of him without missing a beat. Then you realize that the mugger looks like an older version of your mate Spud but you don't know Spud's real first name and are not even sure if he has a last name. So, will the mugger even know who you are talking about when you ask if they are brothers?

Iron Hog, oro grande, CA

State prison in N.H. Country band at the time.
We volunteered our band to the state. Warden said OK.
80 inmates signed up, 6 armed guards in the back of the auditorium.
Singer wore a short skirt and inmates loved it. Standing ovation.
2 weeks later we played at the NH Reform school and thought the kids
were going to kill us. Very nasty bunch.

(That mighta been un-PC, my assuming recidivism ... ah, well. :D)

One local place that I never played had a rep for a long time. One of those places where they check you at the door for weapons, and if you dont have one they give you one. A friend who played there told me there was a large stain on one of the walls. It allegedly was a blood stain from where a murder occurred when one person shot and killed another. They tried painting over it but it kept coming through.

Ironically, the solution is to use KILZ primer prior to painting...

This quote from another thread has me thinking.

What is the worst dive you’ve played in ... (or several)?

For me it’s a clear winner. Some of us that played in a normal band, would do a fill in gig as a power trio. It payed the door and not very well because the doorman would let too many “regulars” in for free.

This was in rundown downtown in a section with dive bars. This one had live music. At one time some decent names played there.... but it had gone way downhill.

Some of the features were that beer was only served in cans (bottles are too dangerous in fights)
The “House special” was Jell-O shots.
A couple trash barrels were put out because the roof leaked, and for patrons to vomit in.
There was a coin-op Condom machine, right in the middle of the club, bolted to a support column.

When you set up and started playing there was one crowd. Mostly people hooking up for couple drinks and drugs and then heading out. Then the place simmerd down for a couple hours and the owners didn’t really care how much you played for a while.

The bar had a license to stay open one hour later than anyone else. So the big thing was the owner wanted you to play for that last hour non-stop. That’s when they made most of their money. The place would fill up with already well lubed patrons wanting a couple more and maybe some action.

That’s also when the action heated up. Lots of intoxicated patrons. Dirty dancing, people getting tossed out. Bad fights, (bloodbaths with certain patrons), it was a regular stop for the police.

I’m sure there’s lots worse though... I lead a shelterd life..:roflmao: Please share:thumbsup:
Oh man how to narrow it down lol.

I guess one that particularly sticks out was in my early 20s (I’m 39 now) we played a gig about 2 hours from home. A venue in Wilmington, NC I will not name out of respect for anyone who might know the staff or owners. Basically the band I was in at the time was playing nu metal. Heavily influenced by bands like Taproot, mudvayne, and Staind. We get to the gig and it looks like the typical hole in the wall. The stage was too small to fit the entire band and only like 4 inches tall. We only had big gear which was way overkill for the size of this place even with minimal PA support(Only used for vocals) . I’m talking 412 guitar cabs and 810 for bass. But the oddest thing was there we were a bunch of 20 year old kids playing nu metal to a crowd that was probably all over 50 years old lol. Highlights of the night was the owners were actually very kind, and there were a few couples that got up and slow danced to nu metal music lol. Anyways what I remember most was everyone in the band was itchy on the way home. I suspect what happened is we were all in such a “screw it let’s have some fun” kind of mood we played loud as hell and probably shook the place enough for insulation crap to be sprinkling down on us the entire gig.
