Worst. Drummer. Ever.

Definitely hate the tambourine/shaker thing. Amazing how so many people in music have such little sense of rhythm and/or musicality.

OP: I would just tell the BL that I cannot work with this certain “Bam Bam” again... “he and I cannot seem to agree on a basic consistent pulse...” etc.

Next time take a drum machine.

Say what you want, but I've never had to bail a drum machine out of jail, take it to the hospital after getting caught sleeping with another man's wife or help load in a 12 piece double bass drum kit. They also don't raid all the beer in the fridge without asking and pass out on your sofa.

It's really no wonder kids are turning to more electronic music these days.

OP, state your case to the BL, and stand behind it. There are a couple of players (one a drummer) I'll have nothing to do with, and the BLs most likely to use them know it.

It isn’t an arbitrary thing, either. Their persona non grata status was well-earned. I’ve gone so far as to say that if they sneak them on to a gig, I’ll walk.

Press on.

..or be outvoted with regards to ousting the guy/gal because he/she happens to be best buddies with the other members or was there first (and said other members didn't give a crap, just as long as they kept getting rebooked and paid in free beer)!

Been there. Quit that!

It seems like a long run short run deal. In the long run, it's better not to work with talent less than your own, that can damage your credibility. In the short run you don't want to bite the hand that feeds you. I think it's actually a whoever blinks last deal. If the BL works with a variety of people, and is maybe a friend of this poor drummer, he's probably keeping him gigged up based on friendship. If that's true, the drummer and the BL probably both have a pretty good idea of his (lack of) skills. What it boils down to is, someone is going to get stuck with this drummer. I think it's BYOD time. if you know a few drummers, make it a package deal the next time this guy hits you up - Sure, I'll take the gig, but I'm covering drums too if that's ok...

This drummer is a friend of his. He is a "deep bench player" and is only "fielded" when the BL has no options. I know two drummers that were free tonight other than that guy...

Edit: The BL does not know these drummers.
Sounds like you need to introduce them. And tell him you won't play with that drummer any more.

I quit a potentially great band years ago because there was a drummer who was great but never showed up to rehearsal, so he was replaced by this other guy who always showed up but who was honestly the worst drummer I've ever heard. We could have pulled some random guy off the street that had never sat behind a kit before and it would have been better than this guy.
Band folded of course, which was a shame.

While I certainly do sympathize - and yes, the BL should smarten up; stiffen up his spine; and find one of those good drummers that are looking for work - I have to tell you a secret. Based on tests conducted in my secret, underground lab? I am the Worst. Drummer. Ever. But, I knew that decades ago, and the closest I ever get to a drum kit, is standing next to it. With a bass...

When I was much younger (1978 or so), I landed a wedding band gig. I didn’t love it but the money was very good. I could do a few weddings each weekend and made a decent amount of cash. The situation was this, the owner of the Agency was connected. He had ongoing gigs at local venues. He played drums and although he sucked, the people that hired him could not tell. His son was even worse and followed in his fathers footsteps. He was also a “drummer” and this was the band I lucked into. We worked a lot. But the thing that really took all the joy out of it for me was that the drummer was so bad , so very, very bad that I was truly embarrassed to be playing with him. He had no foot (bass drum) and seemed to think that by rolling around the toms he was doing a great job. He was totally oblivious to fact that he could not play drums at all. It went from being “okay, I’m making good money”, to “this is bringing me down”, to “I might need therapy if I don’t get away from this”. So, yes, I played with a completely incompetent and delusional drummer for years because I needed the money. I’d do it again if I needed the money but fortunately I don’t. He reminded me of the insane drummer in the video clip I posted a bit back in this thread. I’m an okay bass player, but that drummer in that band was a nightmare and took all the joy of playing and stuffed it into air-sickness bag.

I didn't read through all five pages of posts, so please excuse me if this has been said before, but.....

Sounds like this band leader has done this to you before with this drummer. Maybe your challenge is with the band leader and you should consider not working with him/her. As you say, it's only a couple bookings a month. Surely you can use the time more productively in meaningful relationships, cultivating connections with other band leaders, or, at the very least, not being frusrated and irritated over something you can easily control with a simple, "I'm not interested".

I'm pretty sure this would be my course of action.

Hope this is helpful.

I feel ya man. I've played a ton of gigs I knew were gonna suck just cuz I wasnt booked anywhere better. Maybe some of ya'll TB guys live in a great music town where there's great gigs falling from the sky, but I expect a pickup gig to be a bit dodgy at best. I do my best to put on a good show, and it gets me reputation as a reliable player for better sub gigs. Sometimes I wish they would introduce me under a fake name and I could wear a wig and sunglasses. They can't all be zingers.
