Worst thing to happen during a gig

My worst gig was this weekend just gone.

It's a school fete (a fun day, fairground rides, hoopla games, lucky dip, throw sponges at teacher stall etc etc) Don't know what they call it in other parts of the world but its one of those family, fun, fundraising events.

Anyway we are last band on after acoustic duos, a young rock band, a very good pop-rock "Crowded House"-like band, and a white reggae-funk band.

All the acts have been allocated a 25 minute slot. 10 minute changeovers.

At about an hour before we are on, we've got our gear at the back of the stage area, ready to be lifted on, plugged in and go, guitars tuned. We can set up in 5 minutes. Fast and professional.

It's 5 minutes till the band before us is on. Nowhere to be seen, "have they turned up?" I ask the organizer. She doesn't know. But show is running a bit late, they still have leeway. Well they finally appear, but are just relaxed hanging about. They are hippie-white-rasta-beanie-wearing types. I ask them if they are ready to get on, "oh man just waiting for our drummer".

They finally get on and set up really slowly. They have about 3 people banging drumkit and are just totally self-absorbed. All their songs sound the same. They go on over their time limit. Fete is 10 minutes from being officially over, but organizer says end time is flexible. I'm pacing about thinking how long will they be? Organize says "last song" they say OK. But then play another song, that goes on for ages and has extended stop start ending, can see people drifting away.

They finally finish. Again they take ages to pack up. It's like no one else exists. I say to their singer "It's really bad that you are going over your time allocation and are now taking ages to get off stage". He comes right back at me, face 1" away from mine saying "what are you going to do about it" in a really aggressive way, like he's going to hit me. He has a drum stand in his hand. I say you're a jerk and shove him away. He grabs my throat really hard, before being dragged off by my band mates.

They were singing about peace and love 2 minutes before. Amazing how nasty they all were considering. They then continued to hog the back stage area hindering us getting on stage, putting their gear in the way. Really being c***s.

Anyway we finally got on stage, and the kids loved us. They were really pissed of and even came back stage while we were on to try to take some of our stuff, thankfully repelled by a parent. Unfortunately we had to cut our set short because of all this.

Later on they tried to get payment from the organizers - even though it was a charity event and no one got paid. They stank of weed. I think smoking that at a kids event is so bad.

My throat is still sore from him strangling me, horrible.

We've only ever had trouble from hippie trustafarian bands.

It's weird. Have gigged with killer-looking punks, metal heads with piercings and horror-tattoos, goths and rockabilly bikers, art-weirdos - all as nice as can be, interesting and interested in others. Respect from all of these people, never a problem.

Anyway, that's the last time I play alongside a white-reggae act, they're just nutters.

I'm pretty much over this, so just the short version. I have a longer more detailed version, but it sounds catty now. At the time I wrote it I was pretty pissed. I've since moved on from this band. This was the deal breaker, "I'm outta here!" moment.

Singer has overindulged in the free booze part of the compensation package. New Year's eve, stroke of midnight, packed club: an Amy Winehouse worthy version of Auld Lang whatever, followed by a faceplant. Down for the count, we're dead in the water at 12:08 am 1/1/12. Happy New Year!

My New Year's resolution: Find a new gig.

The list.. Hmm.

Fight between three Bull Riders at the Ranchman in Calgary. Hell, if you ride a pissed-off thousand pound bull, what is a pair of 180 lb guys going to do to you? He fought them off by backing into a toilet stall and held them off for five minutes before they wore him down. They broke the commode with his head, and he was still swinging in a semi-conscious state when the EMT's wheeled him out. People were walking in and calmly pissing while this was going on. (BTW- Do NOT fight bull riders.. NO sense of self-preservation-They fight for fun when they get bored, and buy each other beers when it's over, covered in blood and giggling like loons.)

On a less violent note- Newly renovated club out in the sticks, wiring done by the bar owner. Stage is wired, but not connected to the fuse panel. We set up, plug in, and he goes down to hook it up. Instant "poof" from every fuse in everybody's amps, as he had hooked it up with a few beers in him, and wired it for 220v. We made frantic calls and got SUPER lucky- We got a Radio Shack in the next town to open up after hours just to sell us fuses. The Keyboard player's rig is permanently fubar'ed. Nothing but generic piano sounds. Played the gig, the crowd loved us, and the bar owner kicked everyone out at last call and let us have free reign of the bar and all the bottles. We drank until 5am, deadheaded back to civilization and had to open for Ricky Scaggs- NOT a notorious drinker. We killed. Still drunk and reeking, we raided the catering tent, and went back to our ratty old bus and headed for a four hour bar gig that night and drank yet more, fueled by pasta and mini-thins. (back when you could get those in any convenience store..) I think everybody in the band decided to not drink for a few days just to dry out a little after that. I hurt for days.

Sounds like a really bad experience, dunno why people have to be so aggressive. Were they 16-17 year old spoiled kids?

As far as I could tell they were a bit older than that, I guess 17-22 maybe. Definitely spoiled Gen Yers. I do blame the parents. To go from "peace and love everyone" to "I'm gonna choke you" in a blink of an eye shows you what's really going on with these people. Is it all just a facade?

I found out afterwards too that they'd asked the drummer from the previous group if they could borrow his kit. Now this drummer is a real pro drummer. One of those steady, reliable, can do flash, but doesn't need to, guys. The kit is a 50 year-old classic kit. So he says "er no you can't don't you have your own?". Then rather than accepting his answer (IMHO it's a douche question in the first place), he starts to whine and moan about it! Pro drummer just shrugs it off..

Worst thing to happen at a gig?? We played at a benefit for a lost hiker to raise funds to help find him. The gig was broadcast on the news. Everything was too g great! As I was hamming it up on camera over the announcer's shoulder during our first break, it was announced that they had breaking news about the hiker. They had just found the poor fella dead, face down in a field. Needless to say, that gig ended immediately.

Whoa. You win.

I have been to sick to perform about three times in 37 years of performing. Had a few equipment failures over the years and now I always carry a backup bass and set of strings extra cords etc in a suitcase.

BUT tonight takes the cake. Tonight I missed the first performance with my new band completely due to at home drama involving the cops, stolen property and drugs. Not my drugs mind you but the property was stolen from me and I totally felt my home was threatened. My "house guest" stole from me and as she has a key I felt as though my property was in danger. The cops showed up twice and she is moved out as of tonight. MICHIGAN'S Landlord/tenant law protects the tenant totally and does nothing to protect landlords/owners. This has been the worst night of my professional career, probably will get me fired (although thank GOD they had a backup bassist). What a lesson for me. I tried to help my sons mom (we have been broke up for 33 years- my son is 33) and it backfired in the worst way. I feel that I deserve to be fired for this and would have trouble accepting this from any one else so we'll see if they can forgive me and trust me again. Doing stupid stuff like letting your ex of 33 years ago stay with you (she just got diagnosed with cancer and had nowhere else to go yadda yadda yadda) ended up leaving me to decide between my HOME and my JOB. My own naivety bit me hard tonight.

My lesson: YOU can't rescue everyone. Drama has a way of creeping into every thing if you let it. She was my EX for a reason. my bad. I hope it doesn't cost me the job but i think it will. I am going to post my letter to the rest of the band in the next post and would appreciate any critique TBers may have. I am 54 and been performing professionally for 37 years so I am not a noob, but I did do a really dumb thing. Fortunately they had a backup guy and they were able to do the gig with out me. Not that this justifies anything but this band is a small night club act playing a dive bar in the sticks in rural Michigan. I am SOOO embarrassed but own my actions and will "face the music" and have another band soon. With my experience as a performer I should have known better. But I will live and be in other bands.

hey man, sorry i couldnt get back to ya sooner. really sorry to hear this and glad to hear your still in the band!

played two rush covers at my high school talent show almost 2 years ago now. basically came back to play with some younger friends, a few being in other bands as well. played tom sawyer first; got it down nearly flawlessly. half the show goes by, getting towards the end. the second song we are to do is limelight, so we go on and play maybe around a quarter of the song when my acoustic stack decides to give out.

i know they say the best thing you could do in this scenario is to act like it's not even happening; but it's a RUSH cover for ****'s sake, they are going to notice the bass being gone naturally. so i try to stay calm and look to see if a cable from the amp came loose, no. i try the power button, nothing. after maybe like half - a minute later it starts working again out of nowhere. i nervously try to get back on track but was a bit rattled so i couldn't get my timing and lines totally right anymore. and basically played the rest of the song all shakey and half a$$ed.

my drummer friend was pretty upset but he was just like "it's ok, etc." thank god he's a pretty generous guy. well, our amps and what not were all leading back to an outlet in the backstage area. another friend whom was playing in another band that night claimed he "tripped" on my cable backstage. now i don't choose to point any fingers at this point but things were leading my drummer to think that he purposely pulled it, and he was pretty convinced. it did take quite a bit of for this other friend to realise that he had tripped, apperently. but i don't know what really happened and probably never will. the drummer thinks he did it out of jealousy cause we were a bit more well recieved. i don't really think it would be in his nature really; he did apologise if i remember correctly but i used to wonder sometimes cause he could be very dickish/snobish after a while. so it's really hard to say for me to want to hold it against him. it seemed to be quickly forgotten, and i didn't really care after a while cause i had already graduated a few years back at that time so it's not like i had to hear of it.

lucky for you guys, you can see the video taken of this actually happening!! but it won't show me at the time, you can more that likely hear my bass cut out. i seriously must have pulled it right together before the camera pans back onto me again;

Thank you very much balton4, what a crazy weekend. It definitely reminded me what it was like 33 years ago as a young man caught up in turmoil. I will be living alone for some time to come and will have to feel really comfortable with someone before allowing them to live with me...

Just an FYI in Michigan if you allow someone to stay overnight JUST ONE NIGHT and that person chooses NOT to leave YOU MUST GO THROUGH COURT EVICTION PROCEEDINGS and that takes a minimum of thirty days from the day you have them legally served eviction papers.

So you wanna take that hot chick home tonight? THAT'S ALL IT TAKES and they LIVE there in Michigan. :hiding::ninja::hmm::rollno::eek::mad::(:eyebrow:

all of the above...

Several years ago our band was 2 or 3 songs into a set and everything sounded great. The monitor mix is perfect for a change and I'm just enjoying the ride. Then in the middle of a song, I realize that Rick is trying to get my attention.

What I heard was "We're on and you're not". Needless to say my fun ended right there. Am I dragging? Out of tune? What? For the rest of the set, any time someone in the band looked at me I assumed that something was wrong.

By the end of the set I was beyond frustrated and it must have showed. Coming off stage Rick asked me "What the hell is wrong?" When I countered with "I don't know, I've been waiting for you to tell me!" he had no idea what I was talking about.

Turns out he was on the same ride as me. What he said in the middle of that song wasn't "We're on and your not!", it was "We are really on tonight!"

I guess I'm just another insecure bassman who takes the slightest jab at my inner metronome way too seriously.

My 2 worst....

1) The height adjustment screws on my MIM J-Bass stripped, causing the bridge to collapse against the body. The worst part was I didn't hear it because everything was so blisteringly loud (high school band.. no sence of dynamics). It was just clacking against the fretboard.

2) Playing a battle of the bands at a big local club and the button on my pants broke and my pants fell down mid-song. Ended up finishing the set in a pair of smilly boxers. Luckly they were clean and I was wearing my bass low.. ;-)

This is just the beginning! If you expect to go full-time you should line up as much back up as is convenient. Spares of strings, leads/cords, fuses without too much weight in the case a roll of tape goes everywhere with me these days. There is always that sneaky apprehensive feeling.will an amp pack up or a speaker blow. The entire system blew in a club one day in Germany and no on site electrician. The guys were at lunch listening to base-ball results on AFN. It was up to me to sort the pop out circuit breakers. I did it just as the reader was reading out the last result!!! Good job we were half a day early and lost no actual time. That included lights as well but it was daytime.
These days the story goes; "How many bass players does it take to change a light bulb?"
None, the keyboard player does it with his left hand!!!
