The wood for the Squier basses is old, they use nice newly cut fresh wood for the Fenders, if you smell both ..you'll buy a Fender, when the Fenders get really old, they get like Squiers, then you can still play them, but, a new one is far better.

Squiers are good, but for about the same $ you can get a used MIM Standard.
Seriously for the price of a Squier you can get a Sire that has a more flexible preamp than an American Deluxe Fender and a build quality that can actually compete with one too. You're saving like $1,200 for a bass that is not too different whereas with the Squier you're paying Squier money for a Squier. Not that Squier is evil or anything, I dont want to get jumped. They do feel like toys to me though IMHO.Why Squier when you can Sire?
I have the classic vibe jazz (now heavily modifie) and its been great. I bought it about 7 or 8 years ago when I was a senior in high school for a jazz combo and played it stock for a few years with no complaints. Now its got completely new elegfronics all throughout and I converted it to a fretlwess. Its great now and it was great then! Especially for the price, it was right around 300 on sale at my local mysic shop. I'll note all the hardware is original. No issues with the tuners or bridge

OP is looking for a jazz. Being able to try it before is important for some people, I personally dont buy instruments off the wall because they've usually been messed with by a lot of people. I've only ever bought new basses via online or ordering them.

Both my new basses were bought sight-unseen, new / factory-sealed box. They had a return policy if I needed it, which I didn't
High 5! most people around these parts are all about playing it before buying it, I'm glad I'm not alone. and yes thats what return policies are for. I want to convert mine to fretlwess too, and I've had a heck of a time finding elegfronics. Where did you get your elegfronics from?
This started life out as a Squier the maple body drew me in I then upgraded with CTS pots and CS pickups and slaped me fender neck on it
I have a Fender Jazz bass, too, and every song I play of the Fender I can play on the Squier. Hard to believe, right?
The Squier Classic Vibe Jazz in Inca Silver is one of the best basses in its price range...$379. It plays and sounds even better than it looks.
