Would you play this gig?

A few years ago we had a similar situation. A local car dealership sponsored a battle of the bands with a $600 first prize. It turns out that we were the only band to enter and played a set outside in 95 deg and 85% humidity. At the end of the 'contest' we went to collect our prize. They said this was the first in the series, and we would have to come back to compete again for the prize. This is not what we were told before the set started but what else would you expect from a car dealership. Anyway, the singer, a very strong and tough dude with a bit of a short temper was close to laying the manager out, but we were able to calm him down. He felt bad since he entered us. But I said, hey you are trying to get us gigs, and one turned out to be a real turd. How could we be angry with you about that?

BFunk....
NEVER EVER EVER agree to play for a car dealership without getting YOUR total fee in advance. They are owned and operated by cheap BSTRDS, most of whom are multi millionaires who made their fortunes by sucking money out of everything that breathes. And they are the masters of what they call the "Trick-F**K"...which is what they did to you.

I put commercial real estate owners in the same category. :)

I think that, just for the hell of it, you should make them a counter offer of $200.00 per musician, plus expenses (PA, transport, soundman—if needed, etc.). Then see what they come back with.

Hi,

All 6 of you should show up with kazoos and that's it.

I *like* this idea! Except, I would bring my ukulele too. Six kazoos and a uke. How cool!

Thank you for your indulgence,

Kinda reminds me of a gig I played with a former band a few years ago.

It was mid-August, middle of the afternoon, full sun, at least 95 degrees and high humidity. We were set up on the parking lot of a motorcycle dealership... ON the parking lot (no stage), and a few feet in front of their (light colored) building. No canopy. So the sun was bouncing off the building onto our backs. We were getting broiled from behind and grilled from below.

Better still, the whole time we were playing, bikers were riding around in the parking lot, doing burnouts, wheelies, etc. And some of those bikes were so loud they actually drowned out our P.A. which was far too small for the task. Then to top it all off, our lead singer's dad was out in the parking lot screwing around on a crotch rocket, took a header and knocked himself out... right there in front of us. And for all of this I think we got maybe $50 a guy for playing about 3 hours. Brutal, and never again.

Good lord. Music is supposed to be fun. This just sounds like agony... :rollno:

True Texans don't worry about the heat. In fact we like it.

What else will you do that afternoon? Sit around and watch TV? Do it!

But talk to the event planner. Tell her she needs to rent one P.A. for all the bands.
