It would have to be really really bad. I have a strange, deep seated personality flaw. If I say I'm going to do something, then I stick with it. I'm an ex commercial fisherman and I can think of three different boats I really should have quit off of in mid-season, but despite the fact that the captains and conditons were intolerable, I somehow felt a responsibility to stay.

Having read to the end of the thread I now have a mental image of you trying to quit and walk off while the boat's still out.

Well, I wouldhave had to get off in one port or the other, which was also a probem, because then I would have been on the hook to pay for an expensive flight home.

i'm with this guy:

it would need to be something really bad, like personal danger to me..... I think I could/would stick out a gig instead of getting the band, the crowd, the venue mad at me and possibly ruining my reputation as a trusted, professional musician.

I was a commercial fisherman as well. MichelD was in larger vessels, I’m sure, but the boats I worked on had no lifelines, even… flotation devices were probably somewhere, but lifeboats were absolutely nonexistent.
I have often looked back and wondered why I am even alive. Too young and ignorant to realize the danger, I guess.

Annnd, the last vessel I left, the skipper bought me a bus ticket to get home. Took me a few days, but it was better than hitchhiking.

I haven't ever quit mid-gig, but I was in a situation where the drummer left in the middle of our last set and the guitarist quit right then. The drummer was so drunk (being his b-day) that he could barely play.
The guitarist got pissed and they decided to have a conversation about it right there on stage.
The drummer then got pissed and stormed off the stage. Meanwhile the singer and me are just looking at each other like *** is happening. We got paid for the full four hours though. I'm sure it was a loooonnnnggg ride home for the singer and drummer. (they are still married though)

Which reminds me of that famous Peter Sellers movie "The Party" which in its day was a ground breaking movie. Throughout it all there was a band playing, you can see and hear them in almost all the scenes.

Near the end of the movie there was a baby elephant which pooped all over the set in between scenes, and when a Janitor cleaned up the dung, the band would play "There's no business like show business."
