You do understand music is a form of art, correct? And that there’s no “rules” in art? Right…. ?

If he wants to sound like a banjo while playing a trumpet and creates great a great tune, then it’s art.

He’s using a bass guitar, therefore he’s playing bass. Period. Regardless of how you think a bass “should” be played, he’s playing bass and making art.

He was strumming, plucking, tapping... nope, doesn't count as bass playing.

You can only play root notes and fingerstyle for it to be considered bass playing.

Beautiful piece excellently executed. Anyone who thinks slap and pop is just a tired old copy cat parlor trick with no real redeeming value should take a listen and re-assess their perspective. Musicality makes any technique relevant.

To be fair, the vast majority of slap bass I hear does fit that description. It's great to hear someone doing something really interesting with the technique.

Does anyone have any insights into this guy's right hand technique? He's obviously using his thumb for primarily slapping, and I'm seeing some strumming with his (I think) index finger every so often. Anyone know how he's using his for right hand fingers when he's chording and/or playing melodies?

He's playing fast enough that his right hand mostly looks like a blur to me.

Like a few other guys so far, I really respect this guy's talent and composition skills. The music is not at all for me, however. I don't think it's bad at all, but just does not excite or stimulate me. Much the same way solo guitar generally doesn't move me, either, so I'm not pickin on it being a bass!

I generally dislike slap/pop playing, but that was just wonderful. Not too aggressive and beautifully written.

I'm in the same boat, mang. When someone starts to slap in a Youtube video, I either skip that part or just look for another video. This performance had me captivated the whole time! Most sexcellent

Excellent example, his playing is awesome, there's a few parts in it that kinda throw it off towards the end, that I strongly believe be could have done better. But damn, I'd kill just to be able to mess up as good as this guy.

I really like this too. The clarity of that Ritter is stunning. Sounds like an Alembic to a degree.

No trolling here. Just stating my opinion. I didn't bash his playing in any way. I was merely stating that it wasn't really a bass technique, but more of a melodic tapping.

Am I jealous? Not in the least. I lay down the foundation, and leave the melody to the keys and guitars etc.

And what is melodic tapping?

His Q&A section was on soloing, but during the course of the conversation he also let on that he plays "normal" bass with bands as well as his solo music.
