Hi all,

Curious if anyone here has the TFR with the clean blend mod - was it a huge improvement to the pedal? I've just tracked in the studio with my standard one and a clean track under it and it's sounding huge. Wondering if the mod will get me that sound live. I don't wanna run the pedal in a blender as space is tight already. Thanks!

I found clean blends on most similar voices fuzzes are well worth the addition, even if only used a tiny bit, they really hold things together.

That said, as a previous TFR owner, I would actually go grab a COG Grand Tarkin. Similar concept, executed in a far superior way. Incredible pedal.

I love a clean blend with a Big Muff!

I did not like the clean blend on the TFR however. It sounded to me like it was wired out of phase, with a big dip in low end and volume at some point in the middle. Matt from W&C assured me that this was not the case, but my ears did not agree so I returned it.

Definitely no need for a blend with the TFR if low end retention is your only concern.

But I like a clean blend with high-gain fuzz to bring back some of the percussive thump of the note attack as the signal gets squashed to hell, and also to add in some string growl when digging in.

Must not be too happy if you see the need to modify it :)

I think the point that is trying to be made here is that if the TFR sounded better with a clean blend, Matt would build them with a clean blend.

If you want a Muff with a clean blend, buy one that has been designed that way from the ground up.

Sounds like you're right dannybuoy, sounds like it's out of phase if you're missing lows all of a sudden > I traded away a blender for that very reason a while back cos I couldn't flip the phase. (pardon me while I go listen to Kyuss)

I had my TFR modded for the blend just for the heck of it while I had it sent back in for a repair. I like the pedal a lot as is, but I also really like using subtle amounts of Clean blend as well (like 75% dirty). The Blend does help retain a little clarity that can be lacking and helps clean up the boominess of the low-mids a bit which I dig. The Blend doesn't sound "out of phase" to me, but it does sound like the implementation of the Blend puts both signals a bit quieter in the middle (similar to passive pickup blending on a bass, except in this case one signal is boosted and one passive and attenuated). As such, I wouldn't recommend it for anything more than subtle blending, but it doesn't need anything more IMO.

Love the grand Tarkin - favorite fuzz on my board right now

Was considering buying a TFR. Thanks for saving me the effort.

I'll be the contrarian here... I've owned both TFRs with clean blend and without and I strongly prefer the later. I think the clean blend strangles the openness or clarity of the muff. A clean blended TFR, with the blend all the way off does not sound as good as the non clean blend TFR. I share monsterthompson's opinion that the non clean blend TFR does not need any clean blended in. It retains low end for days.

I do like the Woodchipper's blend strategy of have a clean channel volume control and a fuzz channel control.

Matt warned me the blend version doesn't sound as good too, but I think this has to do with his implementation of the blend rather than blended muffs in general.

Kinda goes back to the point I made earlier in this thread..or in another thread.....if a pedal could benefit from having a clean blend, the builder would include a clean blend.
