Wrist angle? wrong?

can u judge if im bending my wrist to much? and could you take a photo of how you
place ur wrist in sitting position. ImageUploadedByTalkBass1366635230.567389.jpg

Ouch!

Can't post a pic but my plucking fingers are almost in a straight line with my forearm, and I wear the bass around waist level when standing.

I think your upper arm may be too close to your body? Try to raise it a bit so your whole arm is more in a C shape.

IMO yes, that is a severe wrist angle which in time, has the potential to cause injury.

The ideal situation is to wear the bass at a height where the playing position is the same whether sitting or standing. This would entail having the main body of the bass at about belt buckle height.

Cant provide a photo, but here are some clips on right hand technique, that are worth checking out.

The sad thing is too many people play like that and it is kind of accepted now ...

If I would do that, I would have very sharp pain and tendonitis after a week.

Truth.

My wrist angle is similar to the OP's on the rare occasions I play sitting down. 5-10 minutes tops before discomfort sets in. That's why I practice standing up so that my wrist is about as straight as a fairly straight thing.

i play 3-6 hour sessions everyday for the past 6 years, at one point i was having small problems but it went away... this is as exagerated as it gets as my fingers are on the E it straightens out as i go down, but i really cant get any straighter unless i lift my arm and i look like flea playing slap lol

get that wrist straight! unless you get lucky you will develop problems sooner or later. I had to quit my band a couple months ago due to wrist problems that I'm still working through (now with 2 doctors trying to figure it out. - it is more from typing than bass. but if the typing makes the wrists hurt I can't really play in pain. just no point).

good luck.

So why not lift your arm ? I think you should do whatever is required to get your wrist straight, regardless of what it looks like. :)

BTW, resting the arm on the edge of the body of the bass, presents it's own problems. It restricts the tendons, and can also lead to physical problems.

You play a lot for a week or two, and you'll know if you're doing it right or wrong.
...wouldn't work for me for more than three days, but not everyone is the same on that one and you may just be ok.

I agree. Not everyone is built the same. I have a pretty sharp angle (similar to the OP's) at my wrist when I play and I've experimented with various angles/positions. The thing is, I have long arms and for me to play with a straighter wrist would mean hunching my shoulder or wearing my bass much lower (which would mean a greater bend at my left wrist). Anyway, I've been playing for twenty five years and have yet to have any issues with my wrist. Listen to your body before you listen to anonymous folks on Talkbass. ;)

P.S., something to keep in mind is that your wrist angle probably changes depending on what you are playing (which string) so your wrist may not be permanently locked in that position as you play.

i have no problem currently, but i guess i shouldn't take that for granted, ill work on lifting my arm... as much as i hate it, for the greater good.

As was stated in one of the links I posted earlier, a lot of people get away with playing with a bent wrist. This does not mean that it is a good idea to do so.

Also, sometimes these problems take years to manifest themselves. So the fact that you are not experiencing any symptoms now, is all the more reason to change your technique.
