Double Bass writing

i've been writing some pieces for my exams in the summer. it's mostly basic stuff with a few odd bits here and there to make it more interesting.

The way i've been writing them is by coming up with a chord progression on either guitar or keys, then writing the melody around it. This method has worked quite well for me but i was wondering how other people go about writing tunes.

I usually do it the other way. I write a melody then harmonize it. I find I write more tunes that way. I jot down melodic ideas I have where ever I am then harmonize them when I have a chance to get to a piano.
