All kidding aside, I think the logical next step from the fretless jazz with the epoxy-coated fingerboard (he did that, right?) would be a Pedulla 'buzz' fretless. So, I think if he had lived into the 90's he would have been playing a 5- or 6-string Pedulla through Eden or SWR amps. Wish I could have heard that. And if he were still alive today? Who knows, he might have moved on to another instrument altogether, piano maybe, or chapman stick, something like that.
