Xotic Basses?

Any opinions on the Xotic xj-1t? Or the brand for that matter? Would it make a nice next bass for me? (I have a fender american jazz, a warwick corvette standard 5 string (german made), and a rickenbacker)
(I would get the xotic in a 5 string)

I will say i tried a pensa at rudys music in nyc and loved everything about it!

thanks! I don't know of anyone near me in NJ that carry's them. I think I may have saw one at Rudy's. One quick question... I saw that the Jazz style basses had a knob for a humbucker effect? Can you explain this?

You're welcome.



The silver knob in the middle can be pulled up, turning the two single coils into humbucker mode. And it does sound big. Adding to the XJ-1's versatility.

yeah, that's what sucks about being young and knowing too much about gear. there's so much to want, but no money to get anything! thank god I have somewhat of a job and grateful parents that encourage and support me and my music.

and trust me i've been down that road of buying, selling, and trading and i did not like it. i once but a prs singlecut guitar, traded it in, then bought it back a year later. theres always something (or someone) better out there. you just gotta learn to make the best of it.

oh and where are xotic instruments made? it seems like there from japan? am i right?

bass specialties? i was there last week right before Anthony Wellington did a clinic. I only had 10 minutes to try an amp and the owner (i think it was the owner) was very short with me. and he took a 2 hour lunch break when i got there. i had to sit around for like 50 minutes. though i didnt spend much time, i saw a lot of stuff that no other store had. i might come by, but it was a long ride.

thanks, though the one i would go to is in trenton, not too far from bass specialties. idk. id have to call both stores and see what they have. i dont understand why these basses are relatively cheap compared to other specialty, custom basses.

I bought a XJ_1T 5 string a few months back. I owned a few boutique J's in the past and I like the Xotic tone so much more. it's definately a quality instrument. If you get a chance go on you tube and look up Vail Johnson/Xotic bass also John Pena/Xotic. Those videos are exactly what the bass sounds like. Good luck.

Depends on what you perceive as cheap. Play and compare some of the basses that you think are expensive and see where things go.

One of my students has the 5 string Jazz type. Very nice, nice feeling neck, sounds great-no problems.
Sean O'Bryan Smith and Vail Johnson are local Nashville endorsers and love theirs.

When I say cheap I say below 3 grand. Yes, even 1 grand blows my mind at my age, but I understand the market and know that a good Roscoe will run anywhere from $2,600-$3,900. A Pensa will go from $2,900-$4,000. (my bass teacher is close friends with roscoe). All my basses are $2,000 and below. I just think that my next bass should be my final. So why not pay a good chunk of cash for something that I know I'll play, enjoy, and will motivate me to play more! That being said my bass teacher once told me that a bass may or will not make you play better, but can make you want to practice and play more, making you better.

I'm guessing because they are made in Japan and they are still relatively unknown. They are in the same price range as the Sadowsky Metro's (but far better IMHO... I used to own 2).

The bodies, necks and pre's are made in Japan. The finishes are done in the US by Pat Wilkins of Wilkins finishes. And the hardware is US made Hipshot.

I just tried one today in nyc and man it was nice. I saw a flyer for a clinic but I can't make it. It was very versatile and felt nice. Do they make them with maple fret boards with gloss? And more xotic finishes hahaha.
