XR18 and music issue

Hey, I'm pretty new to this mixer and just figuring things out. I was able to hook up a microphone to input one using the XR app and I'm getting signal on the EQ and sound out of my PA.

I wanted to play music from my iPhone through the PA so I got this cord off Amazon that just got delivered. I've got it plugged into the aux left and right which is number 17/18. I'm getting no signal on any of the EQ in the X air app and absolutely no sound. Any idea why?

OK, been screwing around and just noticed, I clicked on "input" tab on channels 17/18 (aux in) in the XR app and moved the slider from USB to line in.

Now I can see I'm getting signal in the EQ on the app next to the AUX fader. However, on the main fader there is no signal showing in the EQ and still no sound coming out.

It could be the cord I got is incorrect. Even though the ends that plug into the mixer are stereo, the end that plugs into the iPhone is just a lightning. Maybe that should be the stereo and then the two ends up plugged into the mixer mono. I just ordered this cord and I I'll try it tomorrow. I have an adapter that will turn the small end (3.5 mm) into the lightning adapter.

Got any pics?
Could be those channels are not being routed to the main outputs..probably being sent back to the AUX outs.
Check your routing table?

This is, however, the drawback of digital mixers. A hardware mixer is not a complex setup.

I was a sound tech at rock clubs for a decade plus and at my first show at a new club I reinitialized the Yamaha LS-9 digital mixer by accident.

18 outputs to amp racks, delay fills, bar mixes, monitor mixes. All blanked.

The head tech was on tour in Europe and said "figure it out, good luck"

So luckily I had gotten there early and had an hour to reset the mixer from scratch. This was the second time I touched this mixer and probably the third time I ever used one.

Traumatic! Still feel the cold sweat. I almost grabbed an Allen and heath gl-24 out of storage that night but white knuckled through…

I ended up ordering another cable off Amazon. I think my problem might be that the lightning connector out of the iPhone goes to 2, 4 inch jacks that are stereo. I think I need the stereo plug on the 3.5 mm side with a lightning adapter to the phone and then mono left and right into the mixer. I think something is getting "canceled out" so to speak.

That is exactly what you need. After that, make sure the volume on the phone is up and that 17/18 are routed correctly to the mains

Been busy.. checked the app, and if you have the AUX in (ch 17/18) set to line, your only output choice is to main L/R.
That said, it could be that your iPhone cannot drive those inputs (not enough output level), but the new cable should help.
When I run music thru my iPhone (on other consoles) is have a lighting to 1/8" stereo headphone connector from the phone, then a 1/8" stereo to 2x 1/4 mono cable to hook up to the mixer. See pics

An Iphone should drive a line level input that is normal in gain range. I use a lightning to 2 RCA cable to drive a stereo line in in my Allen and Heath Zed 14 and it is plenty loud.

Well, I just got home ripped open the package hooked everything up and it's the same thing as yesterday. I'm only getting signal next to the AUX fade and nothing next to the main no music coming out.

Damn, I hope this used unit that I bought it wasn't faulty. I don't know what else to do.

I mean, plugging a microphone into input one works, but when I use 17 and 18, there's only signal on the aux, but not the mains.

I also did get this new cord and have an Apple lightning to 3.5 mm adapter.

This might be the issue I don't know. How do I go about making sure they're routed properly? did you see any of the pictures I posted above of the different screens? Is it in any of those?

Well, I just unplugged them from line 17/18 and plugged one into 15 and 16 and I have sound coming out of the PA. So what could the problem be with 17 and 18?

You will have to dive into configuration/RTFM. It's the cost of the format, unf.

Some good news I have someone that lives local helping me through text message. We ended up unplugging one of the mains and plugging that into the aux 1. While still having a phone cords with a quarter inch jacks plugged into 17/18. When I did that, I had sound coming out of One PA speaker that was still plugged into the main button. Nothing coming out of the speaker plugged into aux 1.


So after that, I plugged the XLR cables back into the main L and main R and I have sound coming out while the phone cable is plugged into 17/18

One thing, though, whenever I unplugged the XLR from one of the mains, I went through aux 1 through 6 and no sound comes out to the speaker being plugged into any of the Aux sends. I was told I should be getting sound while plugged into those

Are the aux sends set to pre or post fade, that would change how the aux out reacts to changes made on the main mix.

While you still have some routing issues to sort out, the first set of cables that you posted a link to more than likely would have caused phase cancellation issues when plugged into a balanced line input since the TRS plug is a stereo output.

Yeah, I think it has. I didn't mean to make it this convoluted.

What you mentioned about the first set of cables is 100% correct. I think that's exactly what happened.

I'll have to look tomorrow when I have some time to see about the pre or post fade . I would imagine unplugging one of the XLR cables from the main L or main R, and then inserting it into any of the AUX 1-6 outputs would still provide sound coming out of the PA speaker don't you think? I guess that's where a setting might be wrong somewhere.

Can you simply use your iPhone cable and plug it in the USB port and use input USB return 1 and 2?

Change your iPhone output to mono for playing Music. Plug in lightning to 1/8" adapter. Plug in a 1/8" male to 1/4" mono female plug. Plug a guitar cable in from 1/4" adapter end to input 17 on the mixer. Go into mixer software. Make sure input is set to analog in. You should see signal on ch 17 meter and on the main. If so, there should be signal at xlr out to amps or powered speakers.
