Y'all boost before octave?

I'm going back to analog octaves after a long time spent with OC-3 and C4. I used OC-2 with guitar ages ago but I don't really remember how it behaved anymore.

I got the MXR BOD now.

Fender J bass into MXR BOD: This is everything I wanted and expected. Excellent tracking, fat synth tone with dry killed.

Ibanez EHB with Nordstrand Big Splits, preamp bypassed, no battery installed
Dingwall NG3, active or passive
These sound pretty weak and warbly without dry, and tracking is noticeably worse even with D & G strings. Dry & octave mix setups are still good, but obviously, the pedal doesn't like something here.

All I can see is that the J bass has far higher output than either of the other basses above, those MIM single coils smoke the DG tone capsule :)

So drop some education on this analog octave noob. Is this where I shuffle the board to add a pre boost? That a thing with analog octaves?

I use Queequeg 1 with a passive bass and do not feel the need to boost.
The list in the link is really interesting!

It does suggest that Queequeg is buffered.
According to KMA, Queequeg is true bypass and I don't hear it messing with my signal when just sitting in the signal chain...not more than any other pedal I use.
I am curious and will do some A/B recording to see if UI do hear a difference when listening out for one, between it sitting in the signal chain and not.

I also find it tracks really well. it manages all pitches on my bass without me having to be extra mindful to play particularly short notes etc, but it does seem to like me plucking closer to the finger board. :)

The two I still want to try are Octron and T-16.
The one I want is a subblaster. in really good condition. :)

This might help...

Thanks, I agree that's a great watch, but that's not my concern at all.

MXR BOD indeed seems to have some inherent weirdness with low-ish signal levels, regardless of active/passive/buffer before/buffer after situations. Especially with the G string of all things and NOT the lower pitched notes. It's not a traditional tracking glitch either; the pitch tracking works fine, but the tone sounds unusual and has artifacts. Kerem's post above describes this very well and it matches my experience 100%.

With my Fender Jazz, both pickups and tone dimed, specifically low action with tons of intentional fret buzz (all terrible ideas for an octave pedal!) MXR BOD has no issues at all :) I'm rearranging my board, will start using the Boss EQ-200 in 2 separate channels mode, the first channel going right before the octave to be used as a boost. Will report results.
