I just purchased this bass and the owner does not know the model number the year it was made,ETC,ETC any info will be much appreciated

Looks like a BBN4 in brown satin. It dosen't have the sculpted lower cutaway like my BB404.

Some where on the web there's a chart of the manufature dates. Look up the Yamaha Bass Club here on TB, maybe some one can link you to the chart.

Thanks for the info do these play and sound as good as the 80's bb. Do you think the stock pups are decent or will they need to be upgraded.And do you know how much these sold for new ? thanks again

They're discontinued so it would be pretty hard to find them new. Those you'll find are probably shopworn.

This might be a bit off topic but according to Yamaha's site, the entire BB series (including the recent redesigns) was discontinued in the US. I wonder if they will come up with something new.

My normalbass is a gibson blackbird .How is the neck on these in comparison to the yamaha?

I think only you will be able to determine the pups issue. I do know one thing... if I used my 404 in any playing out, jam/gig situation, I would most certainly reconfigure the controls to have a master volume.
