I got'em both and with TRB1005 I had similar problems being
"heard" in our crowdy band mix, that's why I wish to shed a light on this

I said that BB425X wasn't that proficient down to treble
"thickness", but then again, with all active TRB1005, when you play with two downtuned active 7 string guitars in your band you'll sure have some "cuttin' thru band mix" problem;)

If you take a look to my profile, you'll find a TRB1004J in the ordinary tuned basses:
it's a beautifully versatile instrument and I use it with my all round cover outfit
We play regularly tuned and the two guitars players there don't adopt any deep saturation so I can let that bass "sing"

I used to play Yamaha BBs with thrash metal band Nowhere: there they failed
So, if you can count on a wider sonic spectrum or don't have to fight against "machinegun guitars" a BB is a jewel of a bass

Yes, that's exactly what the problem was - the setup was criminal.

Well now that I've fixed the problem and calmed down...

I paid £350 new for it. This is amazing value, easily feels worth twice that price. The unfinished neck feels just like my MM Stingray, lovely quality rosewood on the fretboard, excellent fretwork.

The pickups not surprisingly for a P/J config are in that territory. But they are a bit less articulate that the real thing, a little bit muddy.

Overall, well worth the money.

I tried to get a BB425 w/o the pickguard in the US -- even looked over the Yamaha order catalog at the music store, but no such offering here. Apparently readily available across the Atlantic without the pickguard.
It's a nice clean look without, but I guess can live with it.

I just placed my order at GC for the BB425X today. I opted for the metalic red finish to ad a little color to the heard. From what I have heard, these basses give the Fender Mexican series a serious run for thier money. So, I figured I would take the dive. Wasn't planning on it, but GC sold me an acoustic bass with a bum neck and I wasn't walking out empty handed! GAS!

I recently picked up a BB424X from a fellow TBer, and I like it best for its neck. It's nicely unfinished and a little chunkier (front to back) than my Fenders - which I really like. As previously mentioned, the fit, finish and hardware are top notch, even for a bass thrice the price. I think the bass has beautiful tone, but my bandmates really felt like it cut through the mix, better than my Fenders.

I'm really not sure about a light touch. I haven't yet mastered that skill, as I have a very heavy right hand. I've only had it at one rehearsal. Interestingly, my bandmates have requested the Yammy for this Friday.

Having tried both, and eventually getting a BB, I wouldn't agree with this. But it has nothing to do with sound. The BB just feels better in my hands.

Choosing an instrument is just like getting a car. You can look at pictures and see how it performs when someone else is using it, but you're not going to know if its the one for you until you try it for yourself.

I recently bought the "top dawg" of the BB series, the 2024X. Never thought too much about the Yamaha line before checking into the series- These are great basses, excellent design features and great passive tone. I've heard good things about the other models in the series,and I'll rate the Japanese-built models on par with any custom-shop or boutique bass in terms of quality and sound.
Enjoy your 425.
