Yamaha DBR12 and questions

So the boss (my wife) has suggested that I invest in some extra PA to help out the band. I know, I nearly fell over.

The extras will be 2 more speakers, a sub and an EQ.

Noob Questions for the crew:

Vocals (3) , Kick & Keyboard are in the PA. Would love to get the guitar in the PA and lower on stage.

Yamaha DBR 12 (A$599) with DXS12 sub ($A$950). Enough for small to medium venues? 100 – 150 capacity, and they’re not full. We already have 3 dbTech Speakers, not sure of the exact model “Opera” I think.

EQ – Does a dual channel EQ (dbx231) run one channel for FOH & one for monitors? Our main problem at the moment is monitor feedback. Hoping an EQ would eliminate that.

Compression – while I’m shopping I thought I may as well get a compressor as well. Good or bad Idea?

The speakers and the eq come in around $2500 which is the upper limit of my budget. I’m in Australia so add about 25% to US retail.

Can't necessarily comment on the EQ or compression, but I will say that my PA system is a pair of DBR12's and a single DXS12. Any venue too big for that combo would come with its own system. I'm thrilled with it. I run full band through it - 3 vocals, two guitars, drums, and bass. It's surprisingly capable.

I own a DXS 12 sub and have the DBR 12 which I use as a monitor. They should be fine for what you are doing. I own the dxr10s and use those for tops. I would skip the compressor. If you don't know what you are doing they can cause feedback. What are you using for a mixer? I really don't use 31 band EQs anymore. Most powered speakers sound great with the settings from the factory. I don't even use them with my DBR/DXR when I have used them as monitor wedges.

We've only got a behringer 8 channel mixer, with limited EQ. I'm going to buy the Yamaha speakers new because we need them right now. I'm keeping an eye out for a used desk to upgrade, something with more inputs. Might just get 31 band for the monitors and let the DSP in the speakers cover FOH.

Well if you buy a stereo 31 band then maybe your next mixer will have at least have the ability to do two monitor mixes. So you could use it there. I would look around for a used EQ. Most can be had for almost nothing now days since people are switching to digital mixers.
