Yamaha Magicstomp EB review - It ROCKS!!!

Great to read this - I jumped on the wagon as well, but it's been a busy weekend and haven't had a chance to even take it out of the box yet. I'll be sticking with my preamp for my main effects, I picked this up for time-based and ones I don't have. I also picked up some cleaning fluids and an instructional book to get the free shipping... but used my 10% off coupon they mailed out a few weeks ago, so I really scored. I only wish I'd picked up cables to run it through my effects loop. :scowl:

Can anyone report on the octave effect? I'd like a replacement for my old Bass Whammy and have a "mock 10-string" without being quite as much of a tone suck.

By definition, if they're out of stock they can't be "the best and cheapest shops". ;) Wouldn't EU-stock be different if only due to the power supply? - it's not like you can just ship US-market products overseas and vice versa.

...but I'm not sure if this is clearing the way for a "Mark II"/revision, a completely new unit, or the dropping of effects from Yamaha's line. I haven't kept track of word-of-mouth, perhaps someone else has an idea on how they were selling... or not.

I've been using a Behringer V-Amp, and found all of the patches and effects to be unusable. This is much quieter and better sounding with patches that you'd actually want to use in a song. I got to use it with the band at church last night and everybody was blown away. Here's a quick review:

It's got 99 presets and they're actually musically useful!!! You can also store 99 of your own. There are drive/fuzz/distortions, reverbs, delays, eq's, modulations, and only two really weird patches, (Jet Machine and SpaceBass) but even those are fun and useful. The Behringer that I've been using has more patches, but the effects just sound bad and it takes all kinds of tweaking to get a usable tone out of the thing. The Yamaha's effects, presets and overall quality of sound are so much better and most of the patches are usable with little or no tweaking. It sounds very clean and polished and seemed to sit really well in the mix.

The controls are really simple. There are three switches (On/Off, Patch Up, Patch Down) and four Knobs. One knob is a dedicated Volume, while the other three are assigned to the three most important parameters in each patch. There is also a Store button to save your changes. Deep editing is done on your computer using the included software and USB cable. I haven't had time to play with this yet, but what a cool idea! A high/low input gain switch is located on the back of the unit to accommodate active or passive basses. I was a little nervous about the limited onboard controls but, as I mentioned before, the presets are already very usable so it shouldn't be an issue.

There is one input - sorry, no "jam-along" - Left and Right 1/4" outs, a mini plug headphone out, AC in, and USB port. I really like that the headphone out is mini rather than 1/4" because I always lose those little adapters. I/O options, like onboard controls, seem limited compared to the Behringer, but I think the simplicity actually contributes to the Yamaha's superiority. The Behringer has all the midi I/O and all that bull crap that seemed cool, but I never used it. This is a much more user-friendly setup.

One small gripe I have is that the Magicstomp didn't come with a nice little case like the V-Amp, but it's made of metal where the V-Amp is plastic so, whatever. The bottom line is this: The Magicstomp is a great all in one tool, especially for a bass player going direct into a PA. It's infinitely superior to the V-Amp and, for the moment, less expensive. I haven't used any effects before. Would you suggest a unit like this for someone trying to get an idea of what effects I might go with? This would be a lot cheaper to get a taste of what's out there rather than buying a bunch of pedals that I might not ever use. The reasons I am really thinking about buying this is that I really want to be able to practice at home without my rig (headphones) and some of the effects sound enticing. Someone tell me to just buy the damn thing already! I need some more justification.

thats definately the best approach. i bought a digitech multieffects to help me appreciate what effects i liked or disliked. it worked well, despite sounding horrible. the magicstomp sounds fantastic, better than a lot of individual pedals. to be honest a magicstomp and maybe a distortion pedal to go with it is all the effects most people will ever need.

Ummm... you could use a single female to dual male, plug a male into the headphone jack of each device and plug your headphones into the female. Is it weird that I'm getting a little turned on? Hopefully, such a Y cable shouldn't be too hard to find.

BTW - Go over to www.musician.com They're somehow connected with MF and have all the same pricing and probably share inventory, but they ship free on any order over $25.00. I've ordered strings and stuff from them.

And you're in bidniss! You should be able to find all that crap at a music store or Radio Shack or something and the whole mess should cost between 10 and 20 bucks. You may have to have them order some of it. Although, if you're like me, you already have about half of it laying around the house... if you could just find it!!!
