Yamaha Magicstomp EB review - It ROCKS!!!

Yeah that might work as well as look pretty scary, don't see why I couldnt just rip it apart and solder my own 3.5mm ends on there. I pulled the trigger on it at musician.com thanks for the reccommendation, I'll let you know what I think of it when I get it. I should also pick up a pair of Sennehieser(or however you spell it) HD280 Pros for it.

um yeah, that won't work. Those Y cables are for splitting an output to two sources (like two sets of headphones), not combining two inputs to one output. You need a headphone amp that will allow you to mix two signals. I use a Tascam CD-BT1 which is that unit that allows you to loop parts of a CD, etc. I rarely use it for that feature. I just use it as a headphone amp, since it has a 1/8" line-in and I swap between either my PC or my Roland PMA-5.

Hmm, looks like I'm going to have to see how this sounds just as a headphone amp of playing by myself, then weigh how good the effects are and determine whether I want to keep it or return it. If it's no good as a headphone amp... looks like more reasons to spend more money and buy a Cafe Walter headphone amp :) God, I need to really learn how to play better than spending all this money, but I think at some point I'll have all the tools I need to get the job done. I'd rather have all of my G.A.S. out of the way all at once and then completely focus on my playing rather than breaking it up over years and years and dollars and dollars. but this is all for another thread :)

I have been using my Magicstomp for about a week now and I absolutely love it. You can get any sort of effect out of it you want with the deep edit function. It also DOES have amp simulators if you want it in that it can simulate tube, overdriven guitar amp, small radio, and has eq settings. Only problem I've found is the inability to use more than one effect at once. But then again you could get something similar to more than one effect at once if you play around with the deep edit.

Am I correct in assuming that there is no way to use this thing with batteries?

I'd love to be able to toss it in my gig bag and take the bass with me to practice on trips. Also, fewer cables at my feet on stage is always better than more.

I'm thinking he meant that you can't select more than one PATCH at at time. But each patch can be a combination of multiple effects, so it seems like a non-issue to me. At least, that's my understanding.

And Aarix, it's true that there's no way to use it with batteries.

Cool, if that is the case I might pick one up just so I can leave the pedalboard home for rehearsals. I need someone to confirm though, please!

I can confirm this.

On the Magicstomp there are many "named" effects that range from "modern rock bass" to "lead bass" that have different effects incorporated into it. So there are some Fuzz+autowah or Phaser+fuzz+Jetdrive, etc effects. Think of these as Factory determined effects, but you can make your own with the deep edit function with your computer and preview them at the same time! Just click monitor on the software and play your bass. Then save your changes. You can have up to 198 effects in the Magic stomp at any one time 99 Factory presets and 99 User customizable or other factory presets that you upload from the software.

I reccommend getting the Bass version because it is more tailored to the bass player with the word Bass throughout the manual. it also includes all the Guitar effects on the software if you feel like doing that to yourself.

I ordered mine through musician.com and got free shipping on the order over $25.

I've been using this at church for a few weeks now and it's just awesome! I go direct into the PA and it's clean, quiet, and sounds very tasty. The Behringer VAmp I was using made it sound like I was playing through a crappy plastic box. This just makes it sound like I'm getting a great tone from something. I'm not really big on effects - I usually use the Vintage Delay patch for a little flavor - but some times I'll put on some flange or chorus for a slower song. It's really nice to know that it's there. I also like to jump over to the Jet Machine patch during a slow song at rehersal for a laugh. I couldn't be more satisfied with this thing for the money.

I've had mine about a week but have yet found any free time to mess with it. However, I have been skimming the manual and have found it seems to have a "Performance Mode" where you can line up three different patches that are turned on and off by the +, on/off, - footswitches (+ is patch A, on/off is patch B, - is patch C). With any, none or all being on at once. I would think this qualifies as using more than one effect at a time.

I think any patch can be set up for more than one effect also.

In performance mode, of those three patches lined up, you can only have one active at a time and when you switch to the other, the previous is turned off.
