Yamaha RBX Stock Soapbar Pickups

I've been wanting to upgrade the electronics on my bass, a Yamaha RBX774, but a recent visit to the guitar shop has made me aware of the huge costs involved in swapping out both the pickups and the electronics.

Originally, I wanted to get a pair of Barts Classic Bass soapbar pickups and an Aguilar OBP-3 for my bass. Since everything is so expensive, I was thinking of just swapping out just the electronics on this RBX to get the EQ and sound of the OBP-3.

So I want to ask if anyone has any opinion on either the stock Yamaha pickups or the stock electronics, particular to RBX basses?

Stock pickups arent awful, they can mud up a bit but not terrible. The eq is awful. I would most definitely put the OBP-3 in or look into some Duncan stuff, I've had good luck with their tone circuits.
What about taking out the stock Yamaha electronics and changing my bass from active to passive? I honestly don't know what all the chips and stuff do since my bass has no EQ and only a tone knob...

I went into my local bass shop because my rbx270 was sounding a tad muddy and thought pickups and/or preamp my be the worth considering, but I ended up walking out with a new mtd bass.
I'm very happy with the mtd but still wonder what the yamaha might have been like with the mods.
