I have an early 90's Yamaha TRB-6P (single truss rod). In the cavity with the preamp is a green colored trim pot for the preamp volume.

Any thoughts as to where that level should be set? All the way? Half-way? Three-quarters? Just curious because the guy at the Yamaha factory put it very low when I had to swap out the preamp when I first bought it back in '91. Jacked it way up when, out of curiosity, I opened the back plate a couple weeks ago to see what was going on in there.

I played my blue TRB5 at our church service tonight. Every time I play this, I am so happy with the sounds I am getting out of it. It really likes the EB Cobalt strings. Last year, I traded a US Fender Jazz Deluxe fretless straight up for it, and know I get the better end of the deal.

I have the same in my TRB5P and I've played with that trim pot a lot. I've found the best setting for me is slightly above the volume of the piezo. That way when I turn the piezo pot in to add piezo, I can hear the difference of the piezo/magnetic blend from the get go and the volume drop is know where near as noticeabe. I never liked the volume drop when the piezo was blended in half way.

Wuddup guys? I was wondering if It's possible to bypass my TRB6P's preamp and play the pups in passive mode. Has anyone done this? I really don't want to buy a new pre/pups as I quite like them.

P.S: I can't seem to find any information regarding the ciruit board... The thing I need the most is the schematic. Does anyone have it?

Hey there. They are passive pickups, so that's not a problem at all. I took the EQ out of my TRB6 and I just run a volume and a custom passive tone. I was never a fan of the Yamaha pre-amp either.

I think the preamp is alright, but I find myself hardly using the bass\treble knobs. How would you describe the sound of the PUPs in passive mode? And can you still use the piezo?

Hey all, thought I'd show you my TRB-6P. Took out the stock electronic and replaced with Barts and an Aguilar OBP-3. Had a new nut in stalled as well. It's a fast machine. I'm so glad I found one of these for a reasonable price. They are wonderful instruments.

My TRB1004... I've replaced the pickups to Seymour Duncan ssb5
passive (not the NYC).
Preamp us now a 2 band Nordstrand with tone control. 5 knobs. Volume, blend, tone, bass, treble.
The difference is remarkable! More clarity, depth, grunt, and a very sweet top end and every setting is absolutely useable.
Expect to remove wood from the base of the cavity because it's too thick to take normal sized pots. Use long shaft potentiometers if you want. The pickup cavities are deep! I'll have to glue in a hardwood base in both cavities to take up the room.
These basses are really nice to play, but mine is even nicer with kick butt electronics.
