Yamaha!

Unfortunately for me, I just let myself get carried away and ordered an RBX4 A2. I'd been wanting something "Jazzy" (I'm normally a P-Bass guy) and this is an inexpensive way to get there - $299.95 shipped at ZZSounds. I'd seen one on stage recently and I liked the look and sound. Invalid Link Removed

Fortunately, it's a passive bass, so the lights are easy to disable. I'm a sucker for pinstriping. And although I wanted something Jazzy, I'm not a big fan of the traditional Jazz shape. I like the USA Deluxe shape, but those things are expensive. Yamaha got rid of most of the things I didn't like about the RBX shape. Perhaps the black one is what you didn't like. Mine is white, which I liked.

I think I'll be happy enough about it. If not, it'll be fairly easy to get some of the money back out of it.

got to try one recently....love the sound but hate the looks IMO....just reminds me of rock band..or maybe its just the lights

I got one of the RBX4 A2's recently and sent it back. It buzzed on several frets high up bad enough that the note wouldn't sound, and the top edge of the body digs into your arm. Loved the sound though.

That surprises and concerns me. I've had two old BB300's, which were both good players with reasonable fretwork. I generally think very highly of Yamaha's quality control. It factored heavily into my impulse decision to buy the bass. Hopefully I'll have better luck than you did.

Thanks for giving me the input and curse you for giving me a little something to worry about.

Cheers!

Their low end offerings would probably be a good deal at twice the price.

I scooped up an RBX170 as an impulse buy (with the intention of using it as a basis for hardware experimentation), and was pretty surprised with what the instrument produced. All the glowing reviews you'll see on websites are actually pretty accurate.

Sorry about that. :hmm: I really wanted to like this bass. The sound is really nice. It just didn't fit me personally, and I'm sure the high frets could have been shaved down a bit.

I believe it's a JPII signature bass. Very nice.

I have been playing my Yamaha BB605 (discontinued) for a while now. I did replace the electronics (Bartolini pups and pre) but I do that in any bass. I love the neck, smaller body and light weight. I think it looks, sounds and plays as good as ANY bass. I say this because I had a Modulus Q5 for a while and when I went to a gig where I used the Q5 one week with my Yamaha the next, no one new the difference.

I am actually ready to buy a 2nd BB605. Got on all lined up. People have multiple P's, J's, Ray's, etc., why not Yamaha guys. Yamaha makes great stuff.

I have the Nathan East sig model and it is a super nice bass.
