Double Bass Yamahiko Double Bass Pickup

I've been getting rid of the piezo honk pretty successfully with a low pass filter. Then eqing back whatever mid-range I need for presence. Sometimes I don't need any at all. Sometimes I do need a little bit to cut through. Depends on the room. I keep the tone controls on the tube amp pretty much flat and use the mid control on whatever preamp I'm using. the fender style tone stack does not make it easy to get a mid boost if you need it which is why I think preamp pedals and active electronics became popular in the first place

What low pass have you been using?
This seems pretty cool:

But then again how many damn HPFs do I need? :roflmao:

thats the one. i use that one when i use my api tranzformer preamp, or ill just use the broughton studio one that has the hpf/lpf and 3 band eq with sweepable mids. i had them both modded to have 10meg ohm input impedance. if you have an amp with good tone controls on it, unlike my fender clone, you can use just the hpf/lpf pedal. i used just that pedal for years. it sounds great, and has a ton of gain too.

I've been playing around and out with the Yamahiko this year and have drastically changed the setup. I'm only using the bass-side pickup now and like the relative reduction in "mwah" to my ears. (Yamahiko-> Empress EQ -> Noble -> EA Doubler 2 (return) -> EA NL-112) With this bass/amp, cutting at 600hz-ish via the Empress EQ pedal is the magic elimination of piezo-grossness, as well as sometimes thickening up at 150hz-ish. I'm liking the full-range bit on the Noble (as a contrast to Chris) though so I'm usually boosting a little bit of lows in lower-volume settings. The strange thing is with this setup, I haven't been using a high pass filter and that's been ok...

Yeah man the empress looks like a sweet eq and the E side eq'd then Noble'd I'll bet sounds great. I Love the E side by itself...gets a little mushy on my bass and so I like dialing in some of the G side, but if I didn't have the 2 ch Felix thing already dialed I think the Empress/Noble would be a great combo.

I don't think there is any audible difference.

Haha, I should have waited...but wanted them to ship before the weekend started, so I ordered a single M8.

All the comments I could find said that Yamahiko himself prefers the M8, and that others agreed.

I wrote them asking if I could exchange, waiting to hear back. Installation of 1/4" is cheaper, easier to transfer, and I wouldn't have to order an M8 wheel for the other side.

Hey I’m about to bite the bullet and buy another one of these for my carved bass. I just can’t get the sound I want out of my Lifeline...it sounds very good but not enough definition. I have the single sensor on my plywood bass and love it. I’m looking all over for sound clips of the two sensor version, both the in phase and out of phase, but it seems like no one has posted the sound clips. I would love to hear a comparison of single, dual, and +/- dual sensors.

I went back this week and did a little more expirementation with the reverse phase pickup and the TRS setup with one pickup going to each channel of the Felix. Two things I note here: the stereo Yamahiko into the Felix is just the best pickup sound out there. It covers all the bases simply yet really throughly. I have recently expiremented with the EAP ( a great pickup but with difficulties) and the Wilson and all manner of mic blending and tube preamping and the Yamahiko just keeps coming up with the better hand.( I always mean this as what I find at gigs rather then in my studio)
The Y isn’t a mic but considering all the different things that can go wonky on a gig this dual Y setup is, consistently excellent ( when other instruments are also playing) .
Based on playing around with the phase reverse Y this week I can for sure say that it has its own sound not solely based on phase. That is it does not sound the same by itself (in either phase) as the regular pickup sounds nor does it sound the same blended with the regular one in what ever phase relationship. The two original in phase can sound way thinner togethor ( phase cancelation) then the reverse phase in that configuration. Dunno why. The reverse phase always ( on my bass) sounds thicker and more woody.(careful if you think you want this)
That said the E side by itself is totally excellent as I have said before.
I think the dual set up with the new Felix where you can dial in ( from 0-180) the perfect phase relationship is going to sound even better
Also I wrote to Kiyohiko on Monday to get a wire I am missing and he wrote me back with in hours and sent the part by tue morning. So He is pretty on top of orders...

Hey flatback, quick q: if you plug a TS cable into one of your dual sensor/trs jack setups, are you able to hear just one sensor? It would be cool to have the flexibility of the dual sensor/trs jack but with the option to plug just one sensor into a traditional amp with just a TS cable and not have to change anything about the pickup/jack setup.

Yeah totally. I have them plugged in so that the E side takes a TS... but if you want the other side just switch the leads at the pickup. Also you can use the bridge wire so you have the choice of one the other or both with just a TS but if you plug in a TRS it splits the signal. Way cool

So my new Yamahiko dual sensor setup arrived on Wednesday. Kiyohiko was awesome and helped me throughout the process with purchasing and shipping. I bought the stereo jack and a TRS cable so I can run the two sides into separate channels on my Clarus. I’m already somewhat familiar with this pickup, having the single sensor model on my other bass...I wanted to do a major upgrade on my fully carved bass. So tomorrow I will be taking my bass to Bass Violin Shop to have it installed. I’m also excited to try out some basses they have, as I have my eye on one I’m considering buying.

Nice Dave I think you will like it.
On another note- I have been using this dual pickup setup but I also really like the sound of the Y and the EAP blended. One of the great tbings about the Yamahiko system is it’s versatility for another example : all the Y jacks are stereo jacks ( even the mono ones) Kiyohiko just makes them that way. What I have done recently is take my old single sensor jack and added the EAP to it so from one jack I have the Y and the EAP. Then the same TRS cable sends both those signals to the Felix and splits them to each channel. Dope. Way way cool. (I did resolder the Y to ring and the EAP to tip so that if I want to use the EAP by itself or on my other bass I can still run it mono.
The EAP adds some woodiness ( great arco) but really the twin Y setup is just killing
