Double Bass Yamahiko pickup

I’m playing a single Yamahiko now, installed on the E&A side of the bridge. I bought it from Jason Brown who last I checked was planning on carrying them.

I like it! It’s more open and much hotter than a FC, and of course, the cable attachment is done way better. It is surprisingly hot though, and seems to be too much for my Red Eye preamp, but it works great with the FDeck HPF-Pre. I’m trying to fond some spec on it, but so far can’t find any.

I highly recommend the capacitor mod for the single element. It brought mine to life, for sure. I was on the fence about it before the mod- felt a little too wild to wrangle with the EQ, but the cap mod I guess beefs up the low end and pulls down the highs and mids. Works like a charm - mine doesn’t need a pre-amp anymore!

Is the capacitor mod something you can get from Yamahiko? Is it just a different cable, or is there a preamp/box that you put in line before the amp?

It’s dummy simple. There is a cable you can get from them, but if you want to do it yourself, it couldn’t be easier. You just unscrew the little bit that your cable plugs into and solder in a capacitor between the positive and ground wires. The size of the cap corresponds to the amount of signal reduced. There were two different ones recommended by Yamahiko in the thread. I did the lesser of the two, but in hindsight I would/could have gone for the higher one and been happy. It’s still plenty hot, but I’m not on the edge of breakup now.
