NO!
The very first bass that I owned had a pickguard on it.
It was immediately taken off.
From then on I only bought basses that had no pickguard.
I occasionally use a pick,but it NEVER hits the surface of the bass.

We all want basses that sound good and feel good but we also love basses that look good and swapping pickguards is an easy way to change the whole look of a bass.
I think they make some basses look better, like this:

Yep. Until someone comes up with a really cool tort hat (or shoes, maybe?) we gotta have pickguards!
Without pick guards there is no tort. Without tort life has no meaning!
