'Yes' with Chris Squire

Howe's a fantastically skillful old elf/wizard

Howe in the lab, cooking up another prog rock classic.

I will never forget the close to the edge they played @ boston garden in 1978. Chris was wearing that famous white suit with the long black stripes! howe, anderson & squire were standing at the leading edge of the stage, dry ice fog with blue lazers shooting through it was flowing from behind them and falling off the stage, everything below their knees was lost in the fog! Never have seen anything that amazing to this day!

DOOOOOOD! Yes Fragile ! With Tony Kaye? Allright--if yes had not put out Fragile just the way it is then those guys would probubly still be working at a Fish-n-chips place in Manchester or somewhere. The Definition of Yes is BUSY. And it was the BUSY of Fragile that got them to the next level way back when. And to the Guy who says Squire looks like your Grandma---Chris Squier was great on bass way before you were pooping green.

I love the early Yes stuff but I also like "some" of the Rabin era stuff quite a bit. Rabin pulled Yes out of a funk, there's no denying that. Great player, writer and singer. He energized the band when they needed it.
Tony Kaye was an unheralded KB player in my mind. Loved the keys on "Then", not overly technical just well orchestrated and dramatic.
Bruford's drumming on Heart of the Sunrise is off-the-charts brilliant. Howe's guitar playing on America is also outstanding.
So much to like about the band over they years. Open Your Eyes is a great "newer" release also. More modern but still Yes in every way in that it's challenging and relevant. Too bad Genesis didn't follow suit and sold out in the end.

Wow - you must have lucked out. I thought Jeff Berlin did that tour (TL got really bad Hepatitis, so Bill Bruford asked his former bandmate in Bruford to learn the set...in 3 days)...but enough about that. During the Union tour, I was working for an Alvarez dealer - Alvarez was running a contest giving away guitars due to the Rabin connection. The guitar was broken/stolen at the SF Bay Area concert, and the store I worked at was the only store who had that model. Unfortunately I didn't get to go...DANG IT!:crying:

Berlin did a great job subbing for Tony. Not a bad sub! I saw that show too, very good. Wakeman opened the show with a mind-boggling KB solo.

Chris taking a sandwich order. THAT'S funny. :)

Look out, here's another post about a bass! Feel free to skip it.

At one show, can't remember which, the Ric quit working during "Yours is no Disgrace." I was sad.

He handed it off, his manservant handed him the Mouradian, he finished the song with that. I know the Ric guys will string me up for this, but... it sounded better. I was surprised, I liked it on the 90125 era songs we had all heard it played on. It was interesting to be able to compare it, back to back with the Ric, on the same song.

I saw him with the white Outlaw. Actually looked pretty cool. I found one a few years back and still have it. It was unique in having removable onboard effects modules.

That is totally correct. It did have changeable effects modules. I used to look for one on ebay, but gave up after trying for what seemed like ages. Nice score on your part Brad! Update: One on ebay right now... Go figure!

Chris Squier: "May I take your order Guvna'?"
Customer: "Yes, I'll have one order fish and chips . That's funny--didn't you write a song on the Fragile album called the Fish? Good one that one. Now get me my order before I complain to your superior. Last time I was here you forgot my salt and napkins. Now go , move along."
Chris Squier: "Ow bout I smash you in the face with this order of chips you sodding old fart!"

Okay I'm chilled and always relaxed. My man Squier is one of the originators of Progressive Rock. His knowledge and experiance is beyond what most bass players wish. I don't think he's the greatest bass player ever but he deserves respect. That was why I took a bit of offence at the Grandma thing. Even though it could be classified as funny-- it was maybe a bit out of place. I grew up with Yes as a part of almost every day for years and years. My perspective is from the viewpoint of watching and listening to Yes grow as a group and a major force in the music world....... I'm not sure what that's doing to me but I think I like it.

Heart of the Sunrise blew my mind. I took a trip to Dayton a while back, and drove through the mountains of West Virginia, while listening to Fragile. It's an experience that I will NEVER forget.

Yep. Taking a trip is the CORRECT way to listen to Fragile.

:hiding:

BTW Is Squire still pulling out the triple-neck to play Awaken on the current tour? I love that bass but surely at some point his ageing shoulder's gonna cry "enough already"!

Chris has two Rics that he gigs live (RM1999 and a custom 4003 with FOOW finish), a Lakland Precision, a mystery (to me) bass that resembles a Gibson to my eyes, and a Mouradian (sp?) that's for Owner of a Loner (Lonely) Car (Heart).

I saw them on the tour with the guest singer and I was blown away with their live sound. Amazing. And to my ears, his RM1999 and the rest of his rig had all the magic it did back in the day if not more.

from what i understand, jeff berlin did a few dates with the abwh lineup, when tl was sick, including one which got recorded - an evening of yes music plus

the electra bass was used on the drama album, as can be seen below in the promo vid for tempus fugit :

cool bass - built in effects, iirc.
