I've been informed that early models did indeed have the pickup covers grounded. Nonetheless, it is/was still not a Faraday Cage.
I keep mine Pickup cover solely for aesthetic reasons, and struggle with it while looking for a suitable place to play. Lately, I've been succeeding more and more and getting used to the place in front and behind the Pickup cover, although sometimes I miss the sound just above the pickup.
However, bridge cover bothers me a lot because I can't mute the strings when I play with my thumb.

The position of the finger pull shows an indicates an expected playing position of hooking the right hand fingers around the finger pull and plucking with the thumb. Back in the '50s and '60s many players wore jackets or long sleeve shirts so the pickup cover would prevent the players sleeve from interfering with the strings when played that way.

I always thought P Bass covers looked really cool and classy.
Yet in several attempts over the years to keep them installed, I always found they hindered my playing and soon removed them.

And here I always thought it was that fruit with the juicy red seeds inside.
I play from over the pickup to just before the bridge (see the wear marks from my thumb nail in the photo below) covers just gets in the way.
Palm muting while playing with a pick is not possible with the covers fitted.
I'm not into cars covered in chrome and don't think that covers improve the looks on a bass. They just look old and I have more than enough of that for both me and the bass!
I don't use the tug bar but it's not in the way so can stay.

My 3 P Basses came without any covers and come to think of it, I’ve never played one with covers.
For years I’ve always grounded my thumb on the pickup but I’m working on breaking that habit and trying to get in the habit of placing my thumb on the E or A string when they are not in play (4 string) or B and E string when they’re not used (5’r).
This technique allows me to use my thumb to mute the top two strings as needed plus I can do my plucking anywhere between the bridge and neck to vary my tone as needed.
I think a pickup cover would just get in my way. But a bridge cover would come in handy to use mute foam to help create a classic Motown sound.

Nothin' wrong with that. I like the look of covers, but they end up getting in the way. That said, I do rock the occasional tug bar.
