This is great, just beautiful. I have not followed Yo-Yo, but this is really sweet music. I don't know, am I late to the party? Is this old news? Take a listen......

The playing, the setting, the birds...wow. And I like the way he mimicked the birds' songs with the cello at the end.

One thing, though - when you tell people about this, make sure you say it right! Don't slip up and say, "Hey, man...I saw a video of Yo Ma-Ma in the woods!"

Yo Yo Ma is the MAN, I always thought cello would be my string instrument, but I never took it up. Every interview I've heard with him, he comes off like a decent human being, no "persona" there, just a musician.

I've been lucky to see YoYo Ma play several times with the San Francisco Symphony and consider him one of the four greatest performers I've ever seen. (Anna Moffo in Lucia with the Met on tour in Minneapolis, Janis Joplin with Big Brother at the Fillmore and (Nigel) Kennedy also with the SF Sym.)

YoYo's performance also seem to bring a sense of joy to both the audience and his fellow performers.

That was actually pretty great. I kept thinking the vocals were Stevie Nicks. Is this how Miley sounds most of the time? I'm not familiar with her work.

How was this done? Solo recorded first, additional orchestration added? He's not wearing IEMs, so he's not playing along to the acccompaniment. Or is he listening to a recorded track through speakers in the woods? Or…what? I can't find any technical details.

My curiosity is why, when theres so much space under the fingerboard, he doesn't hook his thumb under there for leverage when playing up high - seems like that would make gettin decent pressure on the strings simpler - he's got opposable thumbs, why not make use of the one on his left hand?

Far be it from me to offer advice to one of the world's greatest cellists. I imagine his time is impeccable, but even so, he also appears to be playing very freely. I'm going to assume the backing track was set to his playing after the fact. It's a bit strange--and mentioned in the comments--that none of the reviews of the performance note the backing track.
