Yorkville/Traynor Club?!

Thanks!

The BM400 I am buying is 300w into 8 ohms, but the internal speaker is only 200w - is that normal and is that going to be a problem?

If your prospective BM400's 15 still works properly, then it'll be because that amp's previous owner(s) understood that zero power amp clipping = no fried speaker.

Just boost its bass and crank 'er up as LOUD she'll go clean to make sure.

Abused speakers are common in used bass combos.

Thanks!

That's normal and won't be a problem, unless you do something silly like boosting the bass up full and cranking the amp. That cabinet is sealed I believe, as is the matching extension cabinet. It'll take a lot of punishment.

You could blow a 400 watt speaker with that amp too. You'll hear speaker distortion to warn you when you're pushing it too hard and at that point it's going to be pretty loud.

I had a pair of the slightly larger 1x15 extension cabinets from that era only with the black carpet, that I drove with a GK 400RB. Each was 8 ohms. I used to use just one cabinet for smaller rooms and it did great. The GK would put out a maximum of about 180 watts into 8 ohms. That was pretty loud.

Thanks! I used to own a Yorkie XS400T combo and traded it away for something else - doh!

I now realize the problem I had with it was that it's a 210 and I play a fiver. I'm glad this has a 15" I wish I had orignially had the XS400 115 rather than the XS400T 210 combo.

Live and learn.

For a five-string? The Invalid Link Removed under your BM400 would be nice. Bigger box, bigger bass.

The problem for me is that it says Yorkville Sound and not Traynor on the tag, and the model looks to say 2150 but the 0 is half rubbed off so it might be a 5 or something...

Edit: Actually, searching google under the traynor name with the model number gave me a couple of hits. Including on PAGE 19 of this very thread, who'd have thunk haha?

I have the front grill but it needs recovering since someone painted it. And it's missing the badge.

Well, here's your chance to install a truly protective metal mesh in place of a new grill cloth.

A general clean-up, followed by a shot of matching gray spray paint here & there to mask the wood wounds would be nice too.

In the current bass amp world of tinkle-box tens & tweeters, the venerable 2X15" cab is largely out of fashion.

But they'll come back--just like flatwounds... :D

I'll give the amp a good checking out, but it's mine either way - I put a non refundable deposit down to put it on layaway. I feel pretty secure about it, though - I'm buying it from Bass Northwest and they're a great bunch of guys. They put every used amp through a thorough inspection and testing process before agreeing to sell it out of their shop.

Good deal!

What should I expect from a sealed cab as opposed to a ported cab? I've only ever owned ported combos.

Would the limiter keep me from blowing the speaker?

Better idea!

Hey - I use flatwounds! I new I was going to be fashionable someday!

I actually preferred the XS400T to the 1x15 model...it was tuned better and I thought it had a tighter sound...to each their own!

If, as 62bass has indicated, the BM400's speaker cabinet is sealed instead of being ported, then the extension cab which Y.S. offered for your combo, the Invalid Link Removed, may be the best match.

The Yorkville site says that the 115x is designed to go under the BM400. I think it would just be a matter of tracking one down in great shape and hoping it doesn't cost too much to ship it here.

Yessir!! Actually, it is really only 600 watts, because the head pumps 600 watts @ 8 ohms, and my cabinet runs 400 watts @ 8 ohms. Trust me, on a pinch past (Master) 1, with the gain up, this thing rattles my house. At (Master) 5, the cross above my door fell down, so I kind of took it as a sign... :ninja:

My favorite part of your post? "...only 600 watts..." :hyper:

Crosses-->joists-->rafters-->:eek:-->:hiding: :)

Mmm.., it's a long shot, but you may wish to contact Long & McQuade and ask if there's a BC115X still kicking around in the rental department of one of their stores.

Thanks!

If I am correct, there is a limiter function on that amp. (I have the head that they use with that combo there, I love it).

From the manual:
The LIMITER prevents audible power-amplifier
clipping. Just before clipping occurs the signal
is reduced to prevent audible clipping. The LIMITER
allows clear playing at higher output levels.

Now, I am guessing that this will help with clipping problems. I wouldn't use it as a 100% guard against blowing the speaker, but always good to have something built in to help with it.

(someone correct me if I am wrong). I hope you enjoy that! I got the head + a 15" cab and a 4x10 cab and it sounds awesome!
