I get that. Liking it, I mean...View attachment 985723 While it would be a wrench to lose my Ricks; the Alembic; the T-Bird; and the only lefty Gretsch Broadkaster I've ever seen, I guess it would come down to the '78 Kramer 450B (and yes, I own this one). It's obnoxiously neck heavy - and I mean really neck heavy - and has more sustain than any bass I own (I hate sustain), but it just plays and sounds so good...

David Hungate is on record stating that if he could only have one bass, it would be his Alien Audio 5 string with dual P pickups.

Only ONE ? I'd get a bass that had 5-strings, and pickups that could do the most sounds. And woods that could make the most sounds sound even better. Then I'd look for used. For me that's turned out to be a used Warwick Custom Shop Corvette $$ with Ovangkol neck, Wenge fingerboard, and Ash body. New DR steel rounds every 6 months. AND REALLY GOOD AMP / SPK combination. Paid $1000 for the bass. Got GK 550 amp for $500. Got GK 212 Neo cab for $350. Happy camper here.

David Hungate was the original bass player for Toto and countless sessions dating back to the 70's. Main bass was a 62' Precision strung with Stainless Roto's, although he had another 62' strung with flats as well. Here's an examples of his fantastic playing ; one of the great recorded Pbass tones. He along with Jeff Porcaro laid down the groove on Boz Scaggs album "Silk degrees". Every track is a master class. Have a listen.

One bass? Hmmmm. For me to choose just one bass, I'd have to be able to sell it for enough to buy back all of my existing basses and then some. So maybe like one of those crazy diamond-crusted Ritters? 
One bass would be a vintage P bass in sunburst with a tort pickguard. I'd look around for the right one that's not too heavy and has superb action.

Hard to say for me without hearing some tonal examples or trying one out. I think they're made down in Nashville by the studio bass player Chopper Anderson, but don't quote me on that....

I would most likely pick a 5 string Jazz of some sort - passive if Fender, active if something else. Then again the BTB thing is really turning my crank lately, and I'd genuinely have no issue playing this bass for the rest of my life.

Sell off all but one? This one would stay. Still my favorite, gigged it last night but not today (different band, working the 6'er and fretless). Doesn't look quite so pretty though - has a few miles on it. I guess I'll try to clean it up a bit though wear is wear

Depending on your budget I'd say the most bang for your buck would be Carvin. This is if you can find your flavor of course. It's always quality and around 1K gets you what would cost you 2K through with Fender for example.
Now if you can find what you're looking for used 500-700 will probably do the trick.

One bass would be the Roscoe 5 in my avatar. The 6 is maybe my favorite sounding but the C string is not used that often and can get in the way (although I am pretty used to it) and I like having a B string so...
