You Get One Bass. What Is It?

For years (decades) I had just one bass, my '74 Fender Precision. I've used it for a ridiculous range of music, from extreme improv noise to country, and it's never failed me. Any other bass (like the StingRay I bought last year) is for a bit of variety, but I can't imagine anything being as flexible as the old Fender. It has never not worked for me in any situation.
P.S.: I never use anything but Rotosounds (Swing Bass 66) on it, though I'm experimenting with different strings on the MM.

After finally deciding to go ahead and give one a try I would say my DIB (desert island bass) would be the Fodera E5S that I have. I REALLY should have gone ahead and bought one years ago - it would have saved me a lot of $$!

Good memory - the first iterations had a plastic plate. Neal beat me to it () - it is a 2009 Super J/P with a solid alder body (Sheldon calls the finish "Bronze Age"), pau ferro fb, has an active/passive two-band Glock pre, and satisfies my soul every time I play it.
Sheldon - so it's a Dingwall - duh, I should have known that! When we came up with our wood nameplate I looked for other examples and remember the swoopy plastic attachment. I looked at that, the Ric truss cover and one or two others. The main reason we went with a plate rather than making custom decals had to do with the fact that several of my personal builds have had exotic dark wood necks. If we ever start building for sale and get a cease & desist letter from Fender we'll switch to Warmoth's signature necks and probably put our logo on the truss cover instead.
Went through a lotta basses en route to figuring this out, but for me the lifetime one-and-only-if-I-could-only-have-one is the Sadowsky Will Lee 5 with single coils and a rosewood board.
The ergonomics suit me just fine, the tone makes me smile, and the old-school looks work for an old-school cat like me.

Wow I didn't pay attention when I posted I just moved on. It was SUPPOSE to say a classic MM fiver LIKE Tony Levin plays but looks like Deacons. I like 5ers.
Oy! my copy paste skills ( or lack there of ) hurt sometimes.
And weighs as much as a thousand basses! Haha, just kidding. it weighs as much as 1.5 basses. But one of the most underrated, versatile, and unique basses in history.
I would get a Fender Hot Rod P bass (P bass with an additional J bass bridge pickup). It's a P and a J in one. They are the two most versatile basses in the world, in my opinion. And that instrument rolls them up into one bass.
Life is not about choices... it's about what you do when you have to make them.
You have to make one.
My Ripper has been the answer for most of the last 30 years and remains first pick, but a reasonable P style bass with my Q-filter mod would do just fine, as well.
