Hey bud, glad to find another fan of the MM! I don't know what it is, but I simply have not found a better j bass.

Anyway, I ended up with a pair of regular single coils from a MIA jazz and the East M retro. Installation is a slam dunk and the quality is soberly worth coughing up the extra money. I do have some bartolini stuff in another bass and personally have not gotten along with any barts yet, but you may feel differently.

Out of my own experience I can't speak highly enough about the East. I can make that thing do ANYTHING.

I bought my first good bass in 1971, a Fender Precision, if I could have only one bass now, that's what it would be, well actually a Fender American PJ bass.

I wrote a long post about all the basses I own and all the basses I have owned and modded: pickups, pre-amps, hardware, necks, bodies, woods, 4 strings, 5 strings (never more), fretted, fretless. X'd it.

This is the one. I'm stalled. I want to have gas; my wife is suggesting a new bass for Christmas (love that woman). I try not to play it, keeping my options open.

When I'm not playing it, I wish I was. I built a same spec "beater bass" as a backup for "dive" bars. So far that remains in the car..."just in case".

My "The One" bass: 2014 Fender American Vintage Hot Rod Precision body, 2014 American Standard Neck, Duncan SPB-1, Fender Super 55 Jazz, Passive CTS/Switchcraft electronics, three-way "Les Paul" pickup switch, V/V/3W/T, Chromes flats (45-105, but I swap out a .50 G).

Soothes my soul when I hold it, fills the void when I hear it.

Not really. At least one Thunderbird has to stay. The EB-2 is a body part at this point, so it stays. The 2013 EB is way too good to give up. And I like the Precision. I failed. Unless it came down to which would be the absolutely last to go if Armageddon came and I had to sell them all to keep from some horrible fate. Then the EB-2 would be the last to go. I have had it since the early 1980s and it's got a sound that's impossible for anything else to approach. The combination of a hollow body and a Dimarzio One is unbeatable.

But, I still play Thunderbirds nearly all the time these days.

I have a stock 2015 black American Hotrod Precision bass with Labella Deep Talkin' flatwounds on it, one of the nicest basses I have ever played and it would be my number 1 if I had to ditch the rest. I play mine more than any other bass I own.
