People are complaining about the Osama killing which was done in an attack - it wasn't a firing squad so I don't understand the resistance. Plus he used and women to shield him - how cowardly for a big bad killer.

But what puzzles me the most of all the historical events of war is how did the US ever get away with dropping not one, but two atomic bombs on Japan? How is this act(s) overlooked in the bigger scheme of wrongful retaliation?

Do we always get to do what we want?

Osama launched an attack on our soil, we had every right to hunt him down. While I'm typically very much against the death penalty I can't think of many people in this country (let alone the world) who would question why we felt the need to find him and kill him if necessary.

I imagine we are still quite able but a lot less willing these days. Hundreds of thousands of lives were saved by the atomic bomb by ending the war when it did. The face of war has changed dramatically since WWII. In those days, you just started killing populations until their leaders gave up. Now, civilian collateral damage is completely unacceptable.

In bin Laden's case, we could've dropped an FAE on the compound and vaporized everything within a half mile of it. I prefer the surgical style of operation. You get the bad guy, and the kids and the women get to go on living (except that one).

Finland - now there's a country that's right in the thick of it all.

Ok, so the US can basically do what they want, 'cause they can? But while we kill off 100,000 of thousands of other humans - we bitch and moan and groan about a few thousand and a couple of buildings. Maybe we should call ourselves the land of the home, the and brave, and the hypocrits....(not the brave) remember the draft doggers!

In 1945 the atomic bomb was just the latest weapon, pushed into service like other high-tech advances, and was expected to save more lives than it cost. The full horror of nukes was not known, the horror of WWII was known and real, and I assume both sides were working on the technology, so it was a case of use it or maybe have it used on you.

If that were the case then I seriously doubt we'd have problems with North Korea, Iran, and Pakistan. All these events you're referencing happened when these acts were totally acceptable, in part because we didn't know what the consequences would be and because the rules of war were very different. Nowadays we wouldn't dream of it. Our attack on Osama was justified and (IIRC) the UN was perfectly fine with us going after him. He could have attacked France, Germany, Iceland, Thailand, or any other nation and it would have been perfectly justified for them to retaliate.

Not quite sure what point you're trying to make but it seems like you're a teensy bit misinformed with your accusations.

You really don't know what you're talking about, do you? :eyebrow:

There are tons of books on this subject. Try reading some so that you actually understand the logic and reasoning that went behind dropping the atomic bombs.

Classy.

Also we were actually at war with Japan, and dropping the nukes on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the fastest and, believe it or not, the most humane ways to end that theater. Conservative estimates at US/Ally losses alone for the invasion of the 4 main islands of Japan was estimated at 1 million men.

So ironic that you post this from Hawaii. Take a trip by Pearl Harbor, and watch the video of what brought us (unprovoked) into WWII.
