"You look like a bass player"

Did you have a stupid hat? Lots of bass players wear stupid hats...

Yes, a fedora is SUPER cool, but it isn't cool to wear it with blue jeans and a t-shirt.

Guess I'm not cool. LMBO!!!!

Never got the bass player comment, but can identify with lots posted here!

6'1" athletic 190 long arms and big hands. The youngest (by 10-20 years) in my last band, I always brought the fans, powerstrips, towels, snacks, drinks that would be forgotten by everyone else. I also got pretty good at setting up the drummer's kit, and was a sound guy before playing bass, so would fix whatever system issues there were.

Glad to see a lot of "us" are like that!

Let's see. 5' 10", 167 pounds. No need for hats. Before I got a haircut I looked like a lead singer, which I was. But the bass always called to me. Don't know if
I'm someone's quintessential ideal of being a bass player, and don't rightly care.

Tough call. I'd make an not so educated guess of the guy in black.

I'm in the white t-shirt, i don't fit the "description" of the bald goatee hat wearing bassist but i do fit the "always thinking of everything for everyone" stereotype :D

I work as a line producer on set or at events so it's my job to think of everything. I also have a bachelor's degree as a theater technician so i'm also the one who makes sure all our gear is ready to go, does repairs, teaches the others how to roll cables, makes riders, .... :D

As someone who works in a music store, I can almost always pick the bassists pretty quickly because they wear some stupid hat or some obnoxious clothing. It really bums me out... I'd say only 10% of the bass customers I deal with are actually modestly dressed and down to Earth.

The fedoras drive me insane! They aren't cool unless you are wearing the suit to match and are playing a fitting genre.

My old guitarist looks so 'at home' when holds and plays bass.. Unfortunately, his playing is beyond poor and he should definitely stick to guitar..

In my experience, I've found that an individual's musical niche has an influence on their personality (and vise versa), thus, having an influence on their appearance.

On another note, I am black. People say that I look like a bass player.
Seems accurate.

Folks who say Foderas are not cool are simply voicing their opinion. I think thery are cool. Pork Pie hats are cool too. Damn could Cool be subjective????? Not. What happened is that some uncool people started wearing cool things and the uncoolness still shines through LOL!!!!!

I've always thought "big people" should play bigger instruments and vice versa.

I'm 6' 3" and not far from 300 pounds. I look pretty silly holding a little tiny guitar, but a bass looks appropriately sized.

So... are you a big fella?
well, i'm 5'6 and about 155lbs and to be honest my short-scale feels FAR too cramped for me.

i won't be content until i'm on a full-scale precision but then it will be like, "mate are you playing that bass, or is it playing you?" :D

People think "cool" means popular. Nah, cool is really staying calm and collected in any situation, as in "keeping your cool". If you're rocking the fedora and some shades, you're probably pretty chilled out, just like the bass. Lookin' sweet and keeping it cool.

I wear hats, but I'm not allowed to pick them out. The wife and sometimes her friends pick them out for me and apparently they like the way they look on me. And a straw fedora is much cooler on an outdoor stage in the sun than a baseball cap. I want to get one of those yarn things with the danglies for in the winter, but they won't let me.

Oh, with an education background including knowing about learner styles, FWIW you will find that visually-oriented people typically use visual terms for concepts, such as 'look' and 'appears'; audible-oriented folks will say 'sounds like'. It depends on which sense they normally focus on most. If someone says you smell or feel like a bass player, you are probably too close. And taste, well, . . .

Right on: Now this is the deal...

Some cats look very cool wearing a hat (e.g. Phillybass 101, Marcus Miller, Yaphet Kotto, Popeye Doyle et al), but I have to say that there is nothing... NOTHING... more un-cool, than some dude (especially a bass player) who is NOT cool, thinking he IS cool (simply by virtue of his bass-playing), and who is therefore always trying to LOOK cool by wearing a hat.

It goes without saying that one should not automatically assume an air of *cool* just because one plays the low notes, but to the the chagrin of many (myself included), the hat seems to have become the most common affectation of the intrinsically "uncool" bass player

You either got it or you 'aint

I've gotten that comment from time to time. I have no idea of what that particular girl meant when she said it to you, but in my case I assume it's because I'm large of stature, and therefore physically built like a bassist: 6' 2" tall with a big frame, i.e. big shoulders, long arms & legs, etc. :hmm:

MM
Im 5'8" 105 lbs. and Ive been told I look like a bass player. Maybe its the hairstyle
