I wear hats, but I'm not allowed to pick them out. The wife and sometimes her friends pick them out for me and apparently they like the way they look on me. And a straw fedora is much cooler on an outdoor stage in the sun than a baseball cap. I want to get one of those yarn things with the danglies for in the winter, but they won't let me.

Oh, with an education background including knowing about learner styles, FWIW you will find that visually-oriented people typically use visual terms for concepts, such as 'look' and 'appears'; audible-oriented folks will say 'sounds like'. It depends on which sense they normally focus on most. If someone says you smell or feel like a bass player, you are probably too close. And taste, well, . . .

Ever since I lost 50 pounds, no one tells me I look like a bass player. Of course, no one ever told me that before, either.

I don't think people would guess me. I'm 5' 10" 175 pounds. All my hair, keeps a reasonably good shave. I DO wear hats sometimes though...just....sometimes....like...

Huh. I didn't take up the bass until the last couple of years, just something I'd always wanted to do but never had time/motivation to do so, and now when I tell people I haven't seen for a while, I get the "yeh I could definitely see bass as being your instrument" a *LOT*.

Also, My Friend said stay with the damn bass last Friday lol. But he Looks like a bassist as well. Just don't have the money or the room to get a bass.

When I go into a music store everyone assumes I am there to shop for a trumpet or clarinet for my kid. I'm not. I wander past the guitars and guitar amps a browse a little and they assume I like/play blues. Wrong on both counts. Then I go find the bass section and spend whatever time the selection requires. By the time I leave they are thoroughly confused.

People have told me I look like one a few times, but they all knew I play so that might have an effect on it. I'm tall, skinny and lanky with long hair, often covering my face while playing.

I like to think I look the least concerned with public reaction, which is what IMO besides stature is a dead giveaway of a bassist: comfort in one's own skin, despite how discomforting that skin might be to others.

Yup, this is it. It's about ego. As in, a bass player doesn't have an I-must-be-the-center-of-attention ego. Someone with that kind of insecurity could never be the unsung hero in the back corner. The singer, the lead guitar player, even the drummer, these are all attention seeking roles. A bass player is a bass player because he doesn't need attention. He is comfortable without it.

And this is why it is women who pick up on it. Women are far more perceptive to genuine confidence, versus men who are trying to make up for something they lack.
