"You look like a bass player"

On thing I always noticed about mariachi bands in the San Diego area is that the smallest guy invariably gets the acoustic bass. (I'm sure it has a proper Mexican Spanish name, which I do not know...)

Correction, the smallest guy with the biggest stomach. :p

Its a Guitarrón.

There is no way this is restricted to my scene.

Everytime a group of people head to the stage and one of them is in a stupid hat... bassist. 10 times out of 10.

It is less common in metal... because hats aren't metal...

Metal bass players are almost always sporting a beanie, sorry... knit cap.

completely agree, if there's a dumb hat on stage it's usually on the bass players head.
guitarists are usually effeminate, waifish and possess egos that belie their abilities.
if you don't look like this (fat, manly, humble), you might be the bass player.

Everyone's idea of what a bass player looks like is different. To musicians, a bass player may look like James Jamerson, Jaco Pastorious, Geddy Lee, or Ray Brown. Some of the general population may just imagine a guy with an artistic hat. Some others may see Gene Simmons or Sid Vicous... To some bass players, if the person who said that meant the latter then that person would look like an idiot with a smashed guitar over their head.

It's the polyester shirt and grass stains on the knuckles. Those are dead giveaways. I always put on a different shirt and wash my hands when going undercover as a guitar player or keyboard player. I tear the shirt off and eat the pieces when going undercover as a drummer.

6'3 - 175. I get it a lot, but I have big hands too. It may also have something to do with my habit of using the edge that my wallet in my pocket makes in my pants as a string and play fingerstyle rhythms absentmindedly. I do enioy a good hat, but in most of my gigs lately I end up without a shirt by the end of the set, let alone a hat.

Funny, I get this too sometimes. Always it's a girl who guesses it. I'm not particularly distinctive-looking, average height, average build, hair down to my shoulders, I'm not tall or fat or bald (yet), no facial hair and no stupid hats.

But I have always been a geek and I think I give off that nerd vibe a little no matter how comfortable I feel, and girls can sense that a mile away. I'm a nerd who jumps around like a clown and screams into a microphone while shaking paint off the walls with my instrument, but a nerd nonetheless...

To be fair, i've seen a lot of bass players in stupid hats... but there's this singer I know who always wears a stupid hat and it always looks like he's going to watch a baseball game more than sing some rock.

So the bass makes the hats not so bad, better than anyone else wearing one in fact, but that still doesn't make it right

I have what some have called "piano hands" full octave (on a piano) from pinky to thumb. Which come in very handy on the fretboard. Appearance wise, I'm 5' 10", long (about halfway down my back) hair... I did the buzz cut thing the summers when I was 12 and 13. Short hair doesn't suit me. Five tattoos (so far), two earrings (left ear).

Do I look like a bass player? Not a clue. Cops like to ask: "What are you, a musician?". Often followed by: "Say the alphabet.... and don't sing it!". It seems to the police, I look like a singer!:eyebrow:
