Double Bass YOU - on youtube (DB forum thread)

@Ed Fuqua Don't know if you posted it here but your version of On Green Dolphin Street from the "Four Seasons of Jazz" Series in Augusta, GA is really nice. Beautiful playing and I'm also very enjoying the arrangement. Is every variation of the ending section planned or felt?
Not sure what you mean by "every variation of the ending section", could you clarify?
Originally, the series was to have had a short opening set by a young local musician, followed by a single set by my trio. But there was an issue with the YLM and they bailed, so we were asked to do two sets. Since the concert was "themed" I had programmed about an hour and 15 minutes, so in order to give two substantial sets, we had to just call a couple of things. One was ON GREEN DOLPHIN, the other was FALLING GRACE. In the case of the former, both the pianist (Jonathan Lovett) and I had heard the Hank Jones trio arrangement, so we had a little on stand talk through of what was happening in it with the drummer (Jay Ware, who hadn't heard it) and kicked it off. SO - if you're referring to the rhythm section hits in the first ending, yes they're written out specifically as part of the arrangement (even tho' we weren't reading anything) . Coming out of the ostinato, the chords fall on the AND of each beat, descending chromatically from the tonic to V of ii, then ON the beat going to the iv chord (C D Eb E to F- Bb7 etc.) We did our best :)
Here's Hank's performance...

You can hear I didn't quite remember the ostinato correctly.

But lemme know if that's not what you're talking about....

Thanks for the Hank Jones version, it's really nice. I think the recording quality combined with the crappy speaker made me hear other things that are not there actually.

But regarding the four last bar of the "swing section". There's an Emaj7 first ending, is it also the cue to end solo section? For the piano improvisation, I couldn't hear the bass. I guess in combination with some of the pianist liberty it felt like you where following him. But there is some really nice chromatic descending and ascending line which made it feel like variation every time. Especially at 1:55, 2:40, 3:25, at 4:10 that big fat V chord in the piano and so on. Thank for the information!

New asynchronous trio recording with Gabe Evens and Mike Hyman. Or is it a quartet? Either way, had a lot of fun recording and mixing this one. I thought I was going to hate recording remotely, but this one was a blast, and I learned a lot from putting it together.

Loved it. Great playing and beautiful tune. Really enjoyed listening and watching you all play Alone, together! Also very nice solo Chris. Who's tune is it? Sounds kind of Steve Swallowish. This may be the future of recording for awhile. I just got Cubase on the recommendation of a few friends and have been learning the program while recuperating from the surgeries.

Thanks Trey! The tune is one of my favorite standards of all time, and as it happens, also one of Gabe's. Gabe wrote the reharm on it, a really beautiful harmonic path that is always true to the melody. The tune was originally written by Ralph Rainger in the '30's for a film no one has ever heard of, but it's been on a lot of iconic jazz recordings.

Geez, Don, no idea you were so fast with that pistol. "My name's Don, but most people call me......Don." :D

Edit: @Don Kasper you should know that when I'm shooting video, my music room could actually belong in the "messiest office" thread without irony. There are lights, cables mics, cables, umbrella diffusors, and other detritus everywhere. Just FYI.

I don't think THAT'S what MOST people call him. ;)

Wow. I'll bet it becomes a real "dumpster fire" in there. (place "eye roll" emoji here.)
Please. Go back to the kids' table, newbie. Come back when you have some real game.

Thanks.

Nice reharm! Did you have to play by yourself or did Gabe lay down a scratch track of comp? Give us the Straight Scoop on how the logistics of it all. The few times I've done this it's pretty much been "give us 3 choruses with a X bar intro, 2 feel for the head, tag it three times and end on X beat". So I have to play by myself and everybody else gets a bass track to interact with. Which I find kinda boring...
