It was Charlie Parker Brithday on august 29. He would have been 100 years old… I started working on this piece in college and 10 years later, it is a progression that I still find hard but also very interesting. It might not have been the ideal piece to slowing learning how to play this six string bass…
YouTube makes me discover music sometime and sometimes I feel like I already know the piece. In this case, I find it very nostalgic and I suppose it’s a good time to share it.
A cool thing produced by our local art museum. I was invited to sit in the bass chair for this one, so enjoy. Went fully miced with a PA speaker on a pole for this one, and glad i did. Enjoy!
Nice! The bass sound is really warm. All I can see is that there's a dynamic looking mic on an H-Clamp. Is that what we're hearing in the mix? Also, there's a monitor on a stand behind you - are you doing a Grenadier kind of setup there?
Here's a new asynchronous recording that's audio only with static video. Our faculty trio is doing a number of these as part of our studio classes for rhythm section players. We'll usually do a piano trio version and a guitar trio version with the same bass/drums, then create "minus one" versions so students can record with faculty and we discuss the results in studio class. It's been a really interesting experiment so far, but I think it's working well overall. I'm sure getting my recording and mixing chops together!
Thanks Chris! Yes that is simply an SM58 on the H Clamp, which i ran into a Headway EBD2 with a line to the sound board and a line to that PA speaker you see. I set that up for monitoring for myself and band, a la Grenadier. Worked out pretty nicely. The sound you are heading is all from the SM58/Headway combined with whatever magic the mixer put in there. I was super happy with the bass sound for this recording....intonation maybe not so much, hah.

Not sure what I did, but I’ll take sly devil any day! When I listened to the bass track during mixing, I realized that there was a “Happiness is a warm gun” quote at the beginning of the solo. Also not intentional.
About the drums, that’s good feedback to have and I always struggle with that. Thx.

Actually a newish set of Zyex Mediums on the laminate. They do sound pretty bright, huh? Got Spiros on my hybrid bass right now.
I think it sounds very balanced, there`s warm fat low end going on but with cool spirocore-y sounding complexity on the top. That one had me trying different combinations of red Spiros and EP weichs today actually, I left my bass with Spiro EA and EPw DG. I use the Grenadier mic / pre / powered speaker on a pole -approach exclusively nowadays.
Ah, you mean “stirring the soup”. Yes, that’s part of the studio class. We look at both the form of the tune and the likely course of a solo of x___ length and try to stir the soup at about when we imagine it is likely to boil. Then if the Mark was missed, you get a chance to go back and interact with the solo in a better way later.
But Gabe usually knows to just freak out when the soup is being stirred; he’s kind that way so as to keep me from having to re-record the track. There’s nothing like a good friend! Plus, we play together enough that I can usually predict when his soup is likely to boil.
I find "food analogies" distracting when discussing Music. Sorry. Kind of like Homer Simpson - all I hear is "Umm... Soup." Sorry.
To the casual or inattentive listener, it sounds like you are playing a consistent pattern throughout the take, but you are not. That rhythmic displacement challenges the expectations of the other musicians, and (hopefully) the listeners.
I'm always curious and concerned about making a "soupy" mess, if I "stir too vigorously". That being said - It is fun to get out on the limb sometimes, as long as you don't channel Wile E. Coyote, and plunge into the ravine.
Finally - Bronislaw Kaper (no relation) composed Green Dolphin Street and Invitation - he could have just dropped the mic and split.
