I’ve taken a bit of time to thank my students for what they have achieved this year. It’s the first time I realize how it’s important for some of them to hear the teacher play. So here is an arrangement of Carol of the Bells, one of my favorite Christmas pieces.

It's not exactly a video of me, but yesterday I was reminded I played on what turned out to be a YouTube hit video with 24.3 million views as of now. During my 3rd year at CalArts a couple of composers wrote some music for animators who wanted big band music for their end of the year films, so they put together a big band and we recorded all the music. Turns out a lot of people fell in love with this video and the song, spawning a small fandom. I stumbled across it again last year and was blown away by how much the video and song blew up.

I occasionally scroll through the madness that is Reddit and saw on r/jazz someone asking for music similar to this song. So I had to respond and mention that I played on the song, as well as giving the person a recommenced listening list. Turns out the poster is a bassist and learning what I played on the song, which is a bit flattering but also personally makes me feel a bit weird cause I'm sure it means some people have tried learning "my mistakes" as Jimi Hendrix would say.

New arrangement that will have taken me almost a month to finish. Not because it is hard, but simply taking the time to do it. Yet, I’ve been thinking about it for even longer than that, can finally say it’s done. Emily by the band From First to Last, I discovered them at the Vans Warped Tour in 2004.

This group actually worked quite a bit. We had a steady gig at a Moroccan joint in Providence and we played around New England quite a bit, even making it up to Maine.

Really nice! he production was great, too. I'm going to be trying for something like this soon here at the U, so any information about how that was put together would be really welcome.

Can't tell tons . . . I'm a Luddite. I had my phone playing the track through buds, a Linux laptop as armpit-cam and an older Win laptop taping. After several blown takes -- let's try not playing for months, eh? -- I was playing it pretty safe to lay down a useful bass track.

The rhythm section recorded (separately) playing to the Basie recording as a guide.
Brad Ciechomski , the drummer, synched the rhythm parts and sent that out.
People played at home and emailed or DropBoxed vids and sounds to Brad
Brad and Chris Oberholtzer mixed. Chris runs the jazz program at U of So ME; his tech guy there did the video blend
I have no doubt Brad or Chris would be happy to chat you, gents, about their process. The short version is, those three did a lot of work!

For some reason my bass doesn't seem to sound like Ray Brown or Christian McBride, but I don't think it reeks of EUB either.

I sure miss playing with PJO. The players are great and several are good pals. Brad is a joy to play with. I'm lucky they let me come along!
