You opened for WHOM???

My first (almost famous) band back in the late 70's opened for a few pretty big acts. A few times for The Ramones, The original AC/DC, The Dead Boys, David Johanson, The B -52's...we also partied and mingled with the likes of the Sex Pistols, Blondie, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Johnny Thunders, and any other New Wave/ punk bands that were in town. Later, with my blues band we opened for The Subdudes. We even made the local rock mag cover from the night we opened for The Dead Boys. One of the girls in the pic told me years later that this picture was used in an encyclopedia "Yearbook" (78..79?) for the punk scene phenomenon!

Well, I'm late to this thread. But, back in the 80's I played in a band that opened for:

Leon Russell
Mose Allison
Buddy Guy
Cowboy Junkies
Albert Collins
Johnny Winter
The Sundays (they were great, but we were not a good fit!)
Dizzy Gillespie (he and his band were great, but we were not a good fit!)
The Violent Femmes (that was an interesting show)
Fishbone
The Chambers Brothers

Meh, there were some other famous acts, but I'd have to take more time than I have here at work to think of them. We did have a pretty good run at this one club in San Diego, which is where this all went down.

Albert Collins, I have to say, was the nicest musician I ever met in my life. We actually opened for him on three separate occasions, and got to jam with him once. What a great guy, and what a masterful player and entertainer. I miss him.

:crying:

I'm a fan as well. Great writer. New disc coming in the fall. Duets with various folks. Hope I get to tour on the basis of that release. We'll see what happens.

If it happens and you come through the Midwest I will definitely try to make a show.

@FromTheBassMent: outstanding list of performers, including two of my favorite pop vocalists, Margo Timmins and Harriet Wheeler. No comment necessary on the rest!

Awesome story Bob!!!
Speaking of Zep, My Zep tribute band opened for Blue Oyster Cult in 91 They were such IceHoles, After them sitting in there trailer blowin a bunch of illegal drugs up there nose for two hours they wouldn't even take the time to meet us or anything.
No autographs no nothing they wouldn't even sighn my agents of fortune album. They pulled the plug on us after 30 min and there roadies practicly threw us and our gear off the stage.
Needless to say I broke my album in to little pieces while they were playing and left. To this day when ever I hear one of there tunes on the radio no matter what I change the station.

My same band opened for Rick Derringer in 98 and he was one of the nicest people I ever met, We talked backstage for a good hour or so about everything from Edgar Winter to politics and gear.
That was awesome, That's about it for me

Didn't even get to meet Gene Frenkel? Bummer. :p

Hard to recall (with different bands over the past 30 years I've opened for quite a few)...

Ruby Starr (on her own with the Grey band and also Black Oak Arkansas)
Ram Jam
Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Starship
Head East
Cheap Trick
a bunch of others that I can't think of offhand.

Doesn't take much to open for someone...kind of being in the right place at the right time and whatever act is coming to town that is in need I guess. Never opened for an act like we were on tour, trying to make it ourselves and got any kind of billing. More like getting a call where they just need some filler band to work out the bugs in the PA. You know, the band everyone wants off the stage so they can see the band they really came to see. :D

Fun times though.

We just opened for Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers a couple of weeks ago. Last summer we were the first band to play the mainstage at FloydFest, and later in the evening Blues Traveler was the headline.

Yeah, I know. A stretch for sure. Not like opening for Led Zepplin, or even for Fishbone. Ok, I'll leave now. :hiding:

Anyway SK6ERs were nice guys, and BT mentioned us when they started their set. Playing against BT's back-set stage was cool in it's own right. Their load-in for an evening show started at 6 am! That was the only way they were going to get all of their gear on stage in time.

My band's lead signer hunted with the Ted Nugent. We've opened up for 3 Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, and Big Head Todd and the Monsters. Warrant did a set between our first and second sets too.

But my favorite story is... my High School English teacher was Mr. Winger... as in Kip Winger's brother. I didn't know who Winger was until I was out of High School. :)

bands i have been in have opened for Haste the Day, War of Ages, Emmure and Evergreen Terrace. All Metal/Hardcore bands that are pretty much unknown except in the underground metal scene.

Yeah, there's a place in my town that those bands frequent, havent been there tho but I know haste the day plays there, so does god forbid and the like. Biggest band I've opened for was The lovehammers, it was at the house of blues in chicago the night before killswitch was there so I like to say I opened for them(not)
