Your Bands PA....What's working

Expensive yes, but not anymore than a professional monitor system.
the cost of your average PRO wedge hits 2K-5K each. Plus power and distro.
PSM700 plus the cost of good buds are much less. Very little maintainence, compared to say a Clair system, or a ratt system, or any real PRO monitor system. An XR20 console, rather than a PM5DRH, and you can see that IEM's are a much cheaper solution in the long and short run. The benifits outway the cons 10 to 1 IMO.
Then there are the real benefits to hearing loss, and movement. truck pack, techs, etc..

Greg, I am free to spend my own money on bass gear with no problem but the band is a business and a profitable one. I have no need for 2k-5k wedges or a seperate console for monitoring.

Maybe you didn't read my original post about the type of band and the gigs we do... come on truck pack, techs???

The way you are laying it out you're talking at minimum $3000 per person not including a monitoring mixer. Again that's 11 people or $33,000 for PSM700 and custom molded buds. I can run 4 EV ZX4s and two Crown XTI2000s for a total cost of about $3000...

Don't get me wrong I'd love to go the IEM route but when Gin says the costs aren't that bad I wonder what he means exactly. And BTW my band is pretty unique most of the group are music teachers who in the NY suburbs make pretty decent money (starting out of school at 50k). The drummer is a Doctor and I'm in the Financial Sevices Industry, my point is we are not poor musicians. We're playing 6-8 times per month and typically make between $200 and $500 per gig.

ya, it would cost anywhere from 2k to 3k per guy to get a top notch IEM set up, but it is a good investment for the long term (of your ears! haa) if your individual musicians can afford it... and it sounds like they can based on incomes (personal and from band)... I actually bought my Shure PSM700 on craigs list for 1000 (unit only, no buds) and the dual driver earbuds (MAudio IE30) new for 225... so I saved a ton by doing it that way...

but there are other options out there, such as going with nice dual driver earbuds ($200-250) and then bypassing the wireless units in favor of hardwire set up... works nicely for guys that arent running all over the stage... it's much much cheaper and actually sounds better than wireless setup imo, but of course it comes with the mobility restrictions (depending on how long of a headphone cable extension you get)... you can pick up a nice 6 channel headphone amp to power the phones for under $250 and run 6 different lines off of it... you wouldnt be able to have individual mixes for each musician without the separate onstage monitor mixer, but you could buy the mixwizard monitor console, the headphone amp, and 6 sets of dual driver buds for under 4000 total... guys who run around the stage a little more may require the additional cost of the wireless units though...

there's a little more that goes into it when you have that many band members though (such as adaquate number on channels on the monitor board, etc), but there are many options out there if you ask around!
