Looks are a nice bonus, but they don't matter.
Playability... A good setup will damn near any bass play pretty solid. Some are definitely better than others, but between a Plek and a damn good setup I can make any bass play well enough.

Tone... It needs to have some residence to it, but with 4 million available pickups and 2765 different preamps, and my Kemper... Again, I can make damn near anything sound solid.

No matter what I do though, fixing the feel is beyond my skillset.
