1) A wide variety of usable tones
2) A quality bass that plays easily and reliably
3) A bass that is visually appealing to some degree (which I freely admit is based on foolish vanity)
My band averages about seven to ten gigs a month, so I’m able to afford an “upscale” bass of my choosing. If I was less fortunate financially I’d place cost as one of my top three needs.

1. Sound. I don't need a variety of tones in one bass, I need one sound that I can use without having to turn too many knobs.
2. Playability. I don't want to adapt too much to a whole new style of playing.

I don't have one tone that I look for.
All of my bass heroes had different tones.
I focus on technique.
Different basses have different feels.
You must be flexible.
I must have dark natural woods with gold hardware.
No paint,pickguards or chrome.

1. The ability to cut though the mix with good tone, without getting harsh or maxing EQ settings on the amp.
2. Playability (Good fret-board quality, sound truss rod, bridge that facilitates low action, good ergonomics, minimal neckdive)
3. The first time you plug it in and play a note, you get that feeling...

A neck, definitely.
And it must feel right. The neck is the main factor for me, I think. Neck, balance/ergonomics, and it's got to produce the right sounds.

Playability. All my basses have to play well or I get rid of them.
