Despite how it looks, how many strings it has, how cool or trendy it is, etc. Which one always just brings it home? Mine is my US Glaub(with Duncan PUs) or my Jerry Jones Longhorn. Wouldn't be caught dead at a serious session without either one . . .
My Sterling piezo, no wait, my '79 P, no wait, my CIJ 62RI jazz, no wait, my 4-94. Sorry, can't pick one over the other.
Peavey USA Millennium Plus, J+MM. No matter what style I'm trying to fake my way through, nor venue, nor rig. Definition of "go-to".
Line6 Variax 705. After hearing it back-to-back in the studio with my Spector NS-5, Modulus Quantum 5, a (rented) '64 Fender Precision, and a (rented) '75 Jazz, I used the Variax for the entire album, promptly sold the Spector & Modulus, and bought a backup Variax.
My USA Peavey Cirrus 5. It was great before, but Renson Guitars did a full setup on it and it has become even more amazing. Second amazing is an old Peavey Foundation that I bought for parts and was able to resurrect. However, my P is the most useful.
It really depends what mood I'm in. Some days My Streamer Stage II is Best. Sometimes my Status fits the bill. If I want a "Marcus" like tone, I go for the Sadowsky. They all sound different. For a Rockin P Sound, My Yamaha BB3000MA is best. Actually, it dependes on who plays them. I can make them sound all equally bad.
My Valenti J5 is my best sounding bass. Very modern and punchy. The EMG 40 J's and the Aguilar OBP3 preamp really bring it to life.
This one. It does anything and everything I need, and playing it feels just like coming home: Granted, it took some major electronics changes... Everything's different except maybe the switch, but that's beside the point.
My 1994 Pedulla Thunderbass. Amazing tone with a great presence. It can do things that no other bass I've owned could do.
YAMAHA BB1200 4 string EMG P/J Pups 3 way toggle Neck-P/Both/Bridge-J 1-Volume Knob 1-Tone Knob Both played wide open, all the time... Hipshot D-tuner Have Recorded Direct to Tape with no DI or Comp/Limiter at Cherokee Studios... Every engineer FOH or Recording ALWAYS makes a positive comment about it... Yep... Brings it home.
Ken Smith CR5G. Fell in love with the tone all over again out of the GBE 1200 and Mesa Powerhouse 1000. MMMMhmmmmm.
By far and away, my 08' MIA Fender Jazz V. Punchy, articulate, growling, monstrous all around tone, nothing like it.
