Your Effects Pedal Usage : Octaver ?

While I was reading these 'what do you use' threads I started jamming with the Hog and some chorus and came up with a cool little variation of some sounds ive been using.

This clip is of the HOG -1oct and using the glide (though clumsily while I twisted knobs.. and its late lol so some notes had more glide than others) into the Brown Dog fuzz - mf101+midi sync'd ramp lfo - polychorus. At 1:30 I start fiddling with the chorus settings and after 2:00 I switch it to flange. It was spur of the moment but I thought it sounded cool and its relevant to the thread, so here it is:

I normally use the Pollyanna+flange+exp for this type of sound. The Pollyanna has completely flat attack and sustain until it chokes, so by quickly closing the mf101 filter with each note, you can soften the attack and give it a little simulated glide.. but the glissando function and tracking of the HOG, and midi sync'd lfo's (just midi sync'd finally a few days ago) open up some new possibilities that im going to explore further. We haven't worked on the song to that beat in a while, but for contrast, here's a clip of the pollyanna+exp controlled mf101+flange. The clip is us jamming the first day the keys player was using a microkorg:

EHX BMS

EHX HOG

One of my more favoritest things to do is to run my soloed octave down in parallel with my Qtron run in bandpass or highpass mode. That is the funkiest tone I've gotten. The HOG and BMS are so versatile that I couldn't begin to tell you the options you have. I use my HOG to emulate lead guitar, keyboard, add a subtle high frequency to a pretty standard tone. The BMS is similar in it's versatility. I can have it just to the octave down, or I can have it do the octave and filter, or the octave with the filter coming up into a fuzz. Just too much fun. Running the BMS into the HOG or in parallel with the HOG makes it even more fun. :bassist::bassist:

I don't post here very often - as I am a multi-instrumentalist who plays mandolin, guitar and bass (both 'lectric and upright) as well as drums, but I find myself here more and more reading threads with interest.

I play a 2001 era Dlx American Jazz Bass into an Eden WTX-260 > Eden 210 XLT.

My rig is Boss OC-2 (Octave) > Vintage Mutron III > Ibanez Auto Filter > Subdecay Quazer Phaser > TC Electronics Chorus.Ring Mod.Flanger> Whammy IV> ZVex Jonny Octave > Carl Martin Compressor/Limiter.

I use the effects loop.

So in this rig I have 3 different octave options with the OC2, Whammy and Zvex (as well as 2 different Envelope Filters).

Typically the OC2 gets the dark, burnished lower octave tones that warm things up or make them evil. I use the Whammy either as an octave up or set to 5ths and this Jonny Octave is just an evil, freakin' ragged dirt creator with 2 setting, loud and lean trash or speaker cone shredding dirt.

All these options call for judicious and careful use of the octave effect because in the long run I strive as a bass player to not get lost in the toys, to remain musical, carry the bottom and the pocket and to support the singer.... but given the occasional solo break I'll carefully employ one or several of these devices layered together.

I'd recommend against the ZVex Jonny Octave - it sounds like a dirty and very powerful audible fart machine.
