My current favorite bass is my Squier Jazz Vintage bass. It is easy to play, sounds great without much effort, and I never worry about something happening to it because it was such a good deal.
However, I have found over the last 23 years since I bought it that my Rickenbacker 4001 ('73, crenelated binding very rare look) just feels good and fast in my hands. I unearthed it the other day and put some new strings on it. It needs pickup work (the capacitors don't charge or something? -- must be played for several days before the pickups actually come all the way on) and is in many ways a somewhat ugly child of mine but from the front it is a gorgeous instrument and it sounds delightful.
I keep getting different basses and trying them out for sometimes months or years, and somehow I'll get the Ricky back out and be playing it again. So I guess I'm stuck with it.
I,ve played some wonderful basses over the years, which led me to acquire the basses I have now. Honestly, they kinda take turns being my favorite ever.
Like kesslari, I've gone through more basses than I can count. My SB-2 and Nash jazz now trade off every other gig, and I'm quite content, so I guess they are the best.
My favorite one so far was a '73 P bass with a B neck that I added a SD '52 P single coil in the bridge position. I really loved that one right up until someone stole it out of my van in Louisville in '92.
Both have an insanely low action, sound perfect, and play like butter. The LB75P actually came to me completely messed up and unplayable, but after lots of work by my favorite tech, its absolutely perfect.
The best bass I've ever played was a Dingwall Super J, but my favorites are my top two fours: 2003 Am. Ser. Jazz with noiseless Fralins (seen with my favorite guitar), and 2007 G&L USA SB-2.
